Randy Moss and The Waiver Wire, Which Team Should Pick Up The Wide Receiver?

Kenneth MNov 1, 2010

Randy Moss is on the market and where he lands next might not be determined by need, but by who has the worst record. The NFL's waiver wire allows a team with the worst record to choose first, so those teams hovering at the bottom, may want to consider adding this guy to their receiving corps.

The problem is that Moss is due to make over $6 Million dollars this year, and will be a free-agent next year, so, the teams without playoff hopes should let him slide. With that being said, which teams would benefit most from having Randy Moss on their side?

Washington Redskins

The Redskins, despite the QB controversy, are still in the middle of the hunt for the NFC East, and doing so without a big-time wide receiver. I know Santana Moss is there, but his skills would complement Moss much like Wes Welker did on the Patriots.

Line up big Moss on the outside, and little Moss on the inside, and when you add Chris Cooley and speedster Anthony Armstrong to the mix, you have a very high-powered offense.

We know Dan Snyder has no problems signing big names for a lot of money, but the question is, does Mike Shanahan want to do the same? If the Redskins pull the trigger, look for them to score a lot.

St. Louis Rams

At the beginning of the season it made no sense for the Rams to trade for a big name because they were a work in progress. However, after a 4-4 start, and by virtue of playing in the worst division in the NFL, the Rams are right in the hunt.

Sam Bradford has already shown to be a capable passer. Add a stud receiver to the mix, and give the young QB another option in the passing game, and look out, the Rams may actually make a push for the division.

The one downfall is that the Rams are building from the bottom up, and renting an aging superstar is going against this theory. But the Rams are depleted at WR, and adding Moss could be all the help a young Bradford needs to take this team to the next level.

Tennessee Titans

If looking on the depth chart is any help in gauging this, then the Titans should definitely want Moss, especially if Kenny Britt is out for the season. The Titans are slim at WR, and are going to need a lot of help if Britt can't return.

However, if you are actually looking at the Titans as a team, then this doesn't make much sense, as they rarely take on a big name, especially at WR, not to mention in the middle of the season with a questionable character.

This looks like a good fit, but doesn't feel like one. He should help the team out, if they want him, but I doubt it.

The Bears got off to a hot start, but the Martz system isn't gelling anymore. Jay Cutler is struggling, and the team needs some offensive help.

I am not sure that Moss is a great fit, but if the Bears plan on making the playoffs, they need all the help they can get.

True, the Bears have some exciting playmakers on offense, but they lack a true wide receiver with the skill set of Moss. I am not sure how he'd work in the Martz offense, but I don't think he'd hurt them.

As Lovie Smith and Mike Martz are both coaching for their jobs every game, this could be a last-ditch effort to save them.

Indianapolis Colts

Can you imagine Peyton Manning throwing to Randy Moss? That sure would be fun to watch. With Austin Collie and Dallas Clark out for a few weeks, the Colts could boost their receiver corps instantly by adding Moss.

The downside is that his game and Reggie Wayne's game are too similar, but that would also throw a wrench in the defense's scheme, and allow both to be free from double coverage.

I don't think the Colts really need or want him, but let's not forget who the Colts biggest rival is in the NFL today. If the Colts, who have a worse record than the Patriots, pick up Moss, then Tom Brady won't be able to throw to him in the playoffs.

Kansas City Chiefs

Scott Pioli and Matt Cassel are familiar with Randy Moss, as they shared a locker room for several years in New England, including Cassel's one-year stint as a starter in Brady's absence.

The Chiefs are in first in the AFC West, and are leading the league in rushing yards. They are a one-dimensional offense and need some help in the passing game if they are going to continue to win games.

Kansas City already has Dwayne Bowe, who is a top talent, but adding Moss to the other side will only open up holes for speedsters like McCluster and Charles to break open big plays, and for Bowe to break open in coverage.

The Chiefs have a good record, so they will be way down the waiver wire, but if Moss is still there, are they even going to want him? That is the question.

New England Patriots

Randy Moss practically was begging for his job back in his final press conference as a Viking, and Bob Kraft, Bill Belichick, and Tom Brady were all quick to say how much they respected Moss.

The Patriots did get Deion Branch back, but nobody can replace the chemistry that Moss and Brady had together.

Do the Patriots want Moss back? I'd bet they do.

Will he still be sitting there when the Patriots (who have the best record in football) have their turn on the waiver wire? I doubt it.

Other Teams

The Steelers would be a great fit I believe, but I think this kind of a move would be way out of their comfort zone.

The San Diego Chargers could be a dark horse in this scenario, as they have a terrible record, and are without a go-to receiver. Vincent Jackson will be back soon, but what if they just go for broke and add Moss and Jackson, that could help them turn things around.

The Saints, Falcons and Buccaneers are all fighting for a spot atop the NFC South, and although they all have a bona fide number one receiver, adding Moss could give defenses a lot of trouble. Same goes for the Packers, Giants and Texans.

And, let's not forget in all this speculation, we are dealing with Randy Moss. While he is a Hall of Fame caliber receiver, he's also the guy that just got traded from the receiver-depleted Patriots, and cut by the Vikings, and, if we go back further, remember those Raider days when he just quit on that team?

Maybe the biggest question of all is, if Moss gets picked up on the waiver wire, which Randy will show up?
