Tony Romo, Jay Cutler and the Most Disappointing Quarterbacks of 2010

Patrick ClarkeOct 26, 2010

The 2010 NFL season is quickly approaching the halfway mark, and it's time to take a look at some of the league's biggest disappointments under center.

One of them threw three interceptions in one half, one has been sacked more than 25 times, and two play for the same team.

Whether its a lack of production, too many mistakes, or that their team just isn't wining, these offensive leaders have done everything but.

Jay Cutler

Jay Cutler got the Chicago Bears off to a 3-0 start before quickly taking part in their predicted demise. The Bears, now 4-3, have lost two straight and Sunday's loss to the Redskins fell squarely on the shoulders of Cutler. Cutler threw four interceptions, all to DeAngelo Hall, taking his season total to seven.

Then there is the sack problem. For whatever reason, whether it's too many seven-step drop-backs, poor offensive line play, or that he is simply holding on to the ball to long, Cutler has been getting abused by opposing defenses. In just six games Cutler has been sacked 27 times (9 times in first half at Giants).

The beating became obvious when Cutler didn't return to the second half of the Bears loss at the Giants after suffering a concussion that caused him to miss a Week 5 win over Carolina.

Sure, Cutler's seven touchdowns and seven interceptions seem like a wash out, but he has only thrown one touchdown pass in three games. Combine that with his five interceptions in those three games, and you have one superbly disappointing signal caller.

Alex Smith

NFL fans have waited and waited for the former No. 1 overall pick to develop into a franchise quarterback, but it hasn't seemed to happen.

Perhaps the most disappointing and telling statistic this season for Alex Smith is his 1-6 record as the starting quarterback for the 49ers. In Sunday's loss to the Panthers, Smith injured his shoulder making his status for the coming weeks uncertain.

Dissecting the stats through seven games, to make sure Smith isn't just trapped on a really bad team, we find the support necessary to crown him one of the league's biggest let downs through the halfway point.

Smith has nine touchdowns to go along with nine interceptions, not exactly MVP worthy. Also, he has a very poor 59 percent completion percentage, which calls into question his accuracy. Toss in his 75.0 quarterback rating and Smith is likely to be one of the season's most disappointing players in general.

Tony Romo

Similarly to Alex Smith's team, Tony Romo's Cowboys have been brutally awful through six games. At 1-5, their Super Bowl aspirations from early September are all but dead and it's only week 8.

As the quarterback who would get all the credit if Dallas was 6-0, Romo must be held somewhat accountable for this uncharacteristic start to the season.

First of all, Romo's 11 touchdowns don't look as good when you consider his seven interceptions, including a game-changing one against the Vikings in Week 6. The rest of Romo's statistics look rather good, over 1,600 yards passing, a quarterback rating of 94.9, and a 64 percent completion percentage.

However, after breaking his clavicle in the first half of Monday night's loss to the Giants, Romo will likely miss the rest of the Cowboys' underachieving season and ultimately be considered one of the most disappointing quarterbacks of 2010.

No offense in the NFL has been more disappointing than the Carolina Panthers this season. So it is only right that both quarterbacks take equal responsibility.

Both Matt Moore and Jimmy Clausen have played a significant number of snaps for the Panthers this year, and they have very little to show for it with 57.5 and 52.2 quarterback ratings respectively. Combined they have just over 1,100 yards passing, which makes it no surprise they are 1-5 thus far.

If that isn't bad enough, Moore and Clausen have also combined for a pitiful five touchdowns in six games, and 10 interceptions in that same time span.

All it takes is a quick glance at the league standings to know that Moore and Clausen have been disappointments through the first half of the season.

Donovan McNabb

A lot like Jay Cutler, McNabb's team somehow has a winning record, but it's not because of any spectacular quarterback play.

Though a lot of the blame could be placed on the Redskins offensively, McNabb still hasn't been the Philly McNabb we remember so well. Through seven games he has only six touchdowns and an uncharacteristic seven interceptions (he has never thrown more than 13 in a season).

McNabb has also been a little off target this season, with a 57.5 percent completion percentage. Add in his 76.0 quarterback rating and one has to ask if McNabb is over the hill or just disappointing.

Brett Favre

Last but certainly not least, the gunslinger himself, Brett Favre. Favre has been just as disappointing this season as he was spectacular a season ago. The 41 year-old quarterback has already thrown 10 interceptions in six games, which has since reignited talk of his bad habits.

Clearly Favre is in pain, the elbow tendonitis, the ankle fracture, but maybe this time its simply too much, the physical pain, the mental drain of an ongoing scandal, and the Vikings 2-4 start.

Still, no one thought it would get this bad this quickly and those two factors make Favre the most disappointing quarterback of 2010, and we're only halfway there.

Think anyone shouldn't have made the list? Or know someone who should have been?
