NFL Scores Week 7: 10 Biggest Surprises on Sunday
Week 7 in the NFL was a wild one, from Kenny Britt to Brett Favre to the Carolina Panthers. It was a week in which the Denver Broncos were pounded by the Oakland Raiders and Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers finally won a close game.
Backup quarterbacks like Kerry Collins and Todd Bouman had good games, while another backup (Kevin Kolb) lost his starting job again.
Yes, there were a lot of story lines that no one could have predicted. Here's a look at the week's top 10 unexpected storylines.
10. Carolina Panthers Finally Win
1 of 10
The previously 0-5 Panthers finally won a game, beating the San Francisco 49ers 23-20 in Charlotte.
Panthers QB Matt Moore had a big day, throwing for 308 yards and two touchdowns with only one interception.
WR David Gettis (who?) had a breakout day as well, catching eight passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns.
Most surprising perhaps was that the Panthers won despite rushing for less than 100 yards.
The Panthers improved to 1-5, while the 49ers fell to 1-6, all but ending their playoff hopes.
9. Todd Bouman
2 of 10
With David Garrard and Trent Edwards getting hurt last week, the Jacksonville Jaguars were forced to turn to Todd Bouman at quarterback.
Though the Jags got blown out this week against the Kansas City Chiefs, Bouman wasn't to blame. Bouman was signed earlier this week after being cut in training camp. He threw for two touchdowns and 222 yards.
He threw a couple of costly interceptions in the second half, but by that point, the Chiefs were putting the finishing touches on their victory.
Bouman showed he deserves to be with this team for the rest of the year.
8. Roddy White
3 of 10
We all know Roddy White is good.
But, it's still all right to be surprised when any wide receiver puts up over 200 yards receiving in one week.
White did just that in the Atlanta Falcons' game against the Cincinnati Bengals this weekend, catching 11 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns this week.
The Falcons needed every inch of those 201 yards to hold off the Bengals, 39-32.
7. Green Bay Packers Win a Close Game
4 of 10
After three straight excruciatingly close losses, including two in overtime, the Green Bay Packers finally won a close game.
It couldn't have come at a better time either.
The Packers beat the arch-rival Minnesota Vikings in Green Bay in what will most likely be Brett Favre's last visit to Lambeau Field.
They also improved to 4-3, good enough to tie the Chicago Bears atop the NFC North.
6. Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers Sit Atop NFC Standings
5 of 10
After Week 7, a couple of surprise teams are leading the NFC standings.
The Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, among others, have only two losses.
Raise your hand if you predicted that before this season. Yeah, I didn't think so.
The Seahawks look like they can win the NFC West, while the Bucs look like a team that can steal a wild card spot if everything falls into place.
5. Oakland Raiders Demolish Denver Broncos
6 of 10
59-14. Wow.
The Oakland Raiders absolutely destroyed the Denver Broncos on Sunday, thanks in large part to Darren McFadden.
In his first game back from injury, McFadden ran for 165 yards and three touchdowns. He also caught a touchdown pass.
The Raiders ran for five touchdowns, threw for two, and had an interception return for a touchdown.
4. Baltimore Ravens Need Overtime To Beat Buffalo Bills
7 of 10
Do you think maybe the Baltimore Ravens looked past the Buffalo Bills a little bit?
Buffalo almost upset one of the best teams in the NFL to pick up their first win on the year.
Unfortunately for Bills fans, it wasn't meant to be. Though they forced the game to overtime, the Ravens kicked a field goal to escape with a win and avoid an embarrassing loss.
3. DeAngelo Hall
8 of 10
DeAngelo Hall of the Washington Redskins intercepted Jay Cutler of the Chicago Bears four times on Sunday en route to a 17-14 win for the Redskins.
Hall's four interceptions tied an NFL record. He returned one of them 92 yards for a touchdown.
On a day where neither offense showed up, Hall's contributions on defense gave the Redskins the victory.
2. Drew Brees
9 of 10
This is not a typo: Drew Brees threw four interceptions against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.
Brees could not find a rhythm against a Cleveland defense that was cleverly disguising it's schemes.
The Browns upset the Saints despite scoring only one offensive touchdown, as David Bowens returned two of Brees' interceptions for touchdowns.
1. Kenny Britt
10 of 10
Kenny Britt of the Tennessee Titans did not start on Sunday because of a situation in which he was accused of assault in a bar fight.
However, once Britt got into the Titans game against the Philadelphia Eagles, he made the most of it. Britt finished with seven catches for 225 yards and three touchdowns.
To put that in perspective, Titans QB Kerry Collins threw for 276 yards, meaning Britt had all but 51 of those yards. Also, all of Collins touchdowns were caught by Britt.
Unless Britt gets suspended for the incident at the bar, he could end up being the best breakout wide receiver in the NFL this year.
