NFL Rumors: Los Angeles Could Get An NFL Team Sooner Rather Than Later

Matt RudnitskyOct 22, 2010

Los Angeles might finally get the NFL team that they’ve wanted for so long, as rumors have heated up considerably in the past few days.

With Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson, billionaire Philip Anschutz, and AEG (the company that owns LA Live and the Staples Center) getting in on the action, a football team could be on the way soon.

Magic recently told the Los Angeles Times that he "really, really wants the NFL to come back to L.A.", a quote that not-so-coincidentally came right after he sold his minority ownership stake in the Lakers, freeing up $27 million.

He also sold his 105 Starbucks franchises, liquefying over $100 million of assets.

Neither of these moves are an accident, and with Magic’s current financial situation, he is setting himself up to be a major player in bringing an NFL team to Los Angeles.

Philip Anchutz, the 34th richest American, and 123rd richest person in the world, is also hoarding major capital.

Anchutz, after making his fortune in drilling, stocks, real estate, and railroads, has become a major player in the world of sports business. He co-founded the MLS and is a part-owner of the Lakers and Los Angeles Kings.  The diversified entrepreneur also owns stakes in the Staples Center, The O2 Arena in London, and the Home Depot Center.

His interest in sports is serious, and he recently sold oil and gas reserves in the Northeast and North Dakota, netting his privately-owned Anschutz Exploration Co. a staggering $3 billion.

Combine Magic’s massive collection of wealth with Anchutz’s, and it is obvious that something is going on behind the scenes.

Also, Tim Leiweke, the The president and CEO of AEG mentioned that the company plans to convert the Los Angeles Convention Center into a stadium for the L.A.-based football team, as long as the city secures an NFL franchise.

And with that seeming more and more likely, a Los Angeles team won’t have to hurdle the always-considerable obstacle of securing a stadium to play in.

With so many signs pointing in the same positive direction, the rumors may finally result in some real progress.

Don’t be surprised to see things heat up even more in the coming days, as bringing an NFL team to Los Angeles becomes a reality.

And with L.A. hero Magic Johnson leading the charge, this will be big.
