Roger Federer Dials 900; Stan Wawrinka Next
Roger Federer dialed up a momentous 900 number then disconnected Taylor Dent from the Stockholm Open draw, 6-1, 6-2, in 51 minutes.
It was Federer's 900th Tour Level match. The top-seeded Federer, who has never retired from a match, raised his record to 727-123 in becoming the only active player to hit the 900 mark.
Federer set up a sweetly appealing all-Swiss quarterfinal showdown with his friend and sometime sparring partner Stanislas Wawrinka.
The fifth-seeded Wawrinka held off Robin Haase, 7-5, 6-7(6), 6-4. Former Davis Cup teammates Federer and Wawrinka partnered to capture the doubles gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
"Things worked better than expected. We never expect scores like 6-1, 6-2 in the men's game because your opponent always has a say with his serve," Federer said. "I'd rather be here for four matches than one. If I wanted to just have a great time and play crazy trick shots, I'd play exhibitions."
Playing Stockholm for the first time in a decade, Federer is bidding to match Pete Sampras' record of 64 Tour-level titles.
The World No. 2 has beaten Wawrinka in five of six meetings, including straight-sets wins in the round of 16 at the French Open and Madrid.
One American departed and another advanced.
Wild card and poker ambassador James Blake, the 2005-2006 Stockholm Open champion, scored a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(2) win over German qualifier Matthias Bachinger in one hour and 50 minutes.
Blake evened his season record to 15-15 on the season and raised his record in Stockholm to 15-1.
Next up for Blake is a quarterfinal with Jarkko Nieminen, who upset Tomas Berdych, 6-1, 6-4, on Wednesday. The 135th-ranked Blake is 6-0 vs. Nieminen with five of their six matches going the three-set distance.
Indian Wells champion Ivan Ljubicic could be awaiting the Federer-Wawrinka winner in the semifinals. The fourth-seeded Ljubicic lashed 12 aces and did not face a break point in a 6-3, 6-4 win over over 32-year-old Arnaud Clement in a match of veterans with a combined age of 63.
It was Ljubicic's 10th consecutive conquest of Clement in 12 encounters.
