Philadelphia Eagles Week 7 Report Card: Eagles Drop Falcons Without Michael Vick

Patrick ClarkeOct 19, 2010

The Philadelphia Eagles (4-2) currently sit tied atop the NFC East with the New York Giants, while the Dallas Cowboys (1-4) continue to disappoint and represent the division's only team with a losing record.

But it's how the Eagles have reached their 4-2 mark that is more amazing then where they stand through six games.

Philadelphia has found unlikely success while playing musical quarterbacks for the first six weeks. Unfortunately it's been because of injuries to both Kevin Kolb and Michael Vick. Though with either one starting the Eagles have been consistent winners.

The one overwhelming similarity in Philadelphia's two losses, both games could have been won by the Eagles at the end.

In week 1, Michael Vick was stuffed on fourth down by the Packers defense (Lost 27-20). Again in week 4's loss to the Redskins, Kevin Kolb's Hail Mary attempt at the horn was dropped by Jason Avant (Lost 17-12).

In both instances however the quarterback at the end of the game for the Eagles was replacing the other one who had started the game. Just remember that.

The Eagles get credit for their close losses, but they lose points for where they lost them. Every team in the NFL must win at home, otherwise how can they win anywhere else?

The Eagles are 1-2 at home so far, and the only win came last week in a drubbing of the Atlanta Falcons.

Pointing out their 3-0 road record is somewhat deceiving however. With wins over the Jaguars, Lions, and 49ers, teams whose records combine to 5-13, its hard to say how much stock we can put into that perfect road effort.

Currently, and I say currently because things change quickly in the NFL, the Eagles have the 4th best offense in the league in terms of total yards (380.3), and 7th in scoring offense (25.5).

On the defensive side of the ball however, Philadelphia still has room to improve. They rank 11th in total yards allowed (314.0), and 15th in scoring defense (20.0).

Overall, taking a look at the Eagles current season and placing more focus on their most recent work (31-17 win over the division leading Falcons), one would have a hard time arguing against why they could possibly play for a Super Bowl in February.

But the two stumbles at home count as well (including a 17-12 loss to the Redskins), and that's why the Eagles are good but not great.
