NFL Week 5: Picking The Scores of Each Game

Wesley KaminskyOct 6, 2010

We're through five weeks of the 2010 NFL season, and the season just continues to get crazier.

First, Michael Vick was named the Eagles' starting quarterback before getting injured, and now Randy Moss has been traded back to the Vikings.

Yes, I repeat, Randy Moss is back in Minnesota in exchange for a third-round pick. This is just what the Vikings needed, and Brett Favre has been longing to play with Moss forever.

Moss' first game is against a team he played three weeks ago: the Jets on Monday Night Football.

Here are my Week 5 NFL predictions.

Top QB: Drew Brees—29-39, 324 yards, 3 TDs

Top RB: Steven Jackson—26 carries, 184 yards, TD

Top WR: Terrell Owens—10 catches, 186 yards, TD

Top Kicker: Mike Nugent

Top Defense: Cincinnati Bengals

The Bills have been an embarrassment this season, and are still searching for their first win of the season.

They only have a few winable games in their schedule, and this is one of them. Yes, the Jaguars are coming off of a big win against the Colts, but we know how inconsistent this team is.

One week David Garrard will look like an MVP candidate, but the next he will make mistake after mistake. You just don't know with the Jags, which is why I'm picking the Bills to win their first game of the season.

They have to win eventually, don't they?

Denver Broncos at Baltimore Ravens

After a rocky start to the season, Joe Flacco is rebounding nicely, throwing for four touchdowns the last two weeks, including a game winner to T.J. Houshmanzadeh in Pittsburgh. The Ravens appear to be coming together.

The Broncos are no pushover, though.

Kyle Orton continues to have a monster year, throwing for over 300 yards in every game but one. This is a pure passing team, averaging just under 45 pass attempts per game.

It may be easy to overlook the Broncos, but they are a tough team.

Having said that, I like the Ravens here.

Fearless Forecast: Ravens 27, Broncos 13

Atlanta Falcons at Cleveland Browns

Last week, for the second straight game, the Falcons won behind the leg of Matt Bryant, whose 42-yard field goal gave them the victory over the 49ers.

They escaped in a game they probably should have lost, but credit Matt Ryan for his terrific last drive.

For the Browns, Jake Delhomme will be back in the lineup in Week 5, and the Browns are coming off of their first win of the season. After competing in all of their games, they were finally able to put it together for a victory.

The story for the Browns thus far has been Peyton Hillis, who has scored a touchdown in each week, and ran for over 100 yards against both the Ravens and the Bengals, the Browns' previous two games.

I think the Browns will keep it close again here, and could even steal it. However, my mind tells me to go with the Falcons to win their fourth in a row.

Fearless Forecast: Falcons 20, Browns 16

In an anticipated Week 5, the Chiefs-Colts game is the most intriguing game of the week for me.

The Chiefs have come out of the gate running, and are the only undefeated team in the league right now.

Yes, you heard me correct. They are the only team that has not lost a game.

Meanwhile, the Colts have gotten off to a slow start, and got shocked at the buzzer in Jacksonville thanks to Josh Scobee's 59-yard field goal. Something tells me the Colts will come out firing this week and won't let the Chiefs remain undefeated.

This is a huge test for the Chiefs. Are they for real?

The Terrell Owens coming-out party was last week, as the receiver brought in 10 catches for an astounding 222 yards, including one touchdown.

Unfortunately though, the Bengals lost the game, suffering their first AFC North loss since 2008.

Next up, they face a Buccaneers team that is 2-1 and coming off of a bye week. After a surprising 2-0 start, The Bucs suffered their first loss when they got rocked against the Steelers.

Still, this is better than they expected at this point in the season. Josh Freeman has played well, but must continue doing so if they want to win this game.

The Bengals will bounce back.

Green Bay Packers at Washington Redskins

Last week, in Donovan McNabb's emotional return to Philly, the Redskins won an ugly game 17-12.

McNabb did what he had to do, and sealed the game with a scramble on third down late in the fourth quarter. He will have to do more this week against the Packers, who are an offensive juggernaut.

The Packers are coming off a game against the Lions that was closer than they would have hoped. They let the Lions back in the game, but were luckily able to hold on.

This game could really go either way. The Redskins need this one to prove they can be consistent, while the Packers need this one to show they are really as good as advertised. I don't think they are.

The Redskins win a close one.

The Lions are due for a win any game now.

Seriously, just look at their schedule. The Lions have lost three of their four games by five points or less, including one against the Bears where Calvin Johnson got robbed.

Does their first win come this week?

The Rams have been a pleasant surprise so far, and are riding a two-game winning streak. Sam Bradford has been very impressive, and has the Rams desiring an NFC West title.

While it is the Lions, a road win here would go along way for Bradford and the Rams.

Though I don't think they get it. The Lions will finally win this week.

Fearless Forecast: Lions 34, Rams 31

Chicago Bears at Carolina Panthers

After many started to believe in the Bears, they put on one of the worst offensive performances I've ever seen against the Giants last week.

Jay Cutler got hurt and was sacked nine times in the process. Todd Collins will start for the Bears, and judging from what we saw last week, that is not too promising.

Jimmy Clausen was much better in his second start than in his first, as the Panthers nearly won in New Orleans. Now, for the rest of the season, they are just praying that Clausen is the guy who can be their franchise quarterback.

The Panthers will be without Steve Smith in this one due to a high ankle sprain, but will it matter? The Panthers will pick up their first win of the season here.

Fearless Forecast: Panthers 17, Bears 9

Last week, the Giants' defense was dominant, sacking Jay Cutler nine times, knocking him out of the game, and then even knocking out Todd Collins, too.

Yeah, I'd call that a dominating performance.

Meanwhile, the Texans took care of business in Oakland, while Arian Foster continued his huge year, recording 186 total yards while finding the end zone twice. The Texans did this without Andre Johnson, and he will be back against the Giants.

The Texans' last game against an NFC East team was bad, when they lost to the Cowboys 27-13. The result will be different this time around.

The Saints' offense has not looked right all season, and I have a feeling the Cardinals will be the remedy for that.

In their two losses this season, the Cardinals have given up 41 points. Oh yeah, and did I mention that rookie Max Hall will be starting for the Cardinals?

Dear Kurt Warner,

Please come back. We are irrelevant without you

Sincerely,

The Arizona Cardinals Organization.

The Saints roll in the desert.

The Titans are in trouble on Sunday.

Struggling with inconsistency, the Titans travel to Dallas to play a Cowboys team coming off of a bye. Yes, the Cowboys are 1-2, and yes, they looked great before the bye week in Houston. The bye came at a perfect time for "America's Team."

What was really promising in their win over the Texans was the play of the trio of Miles Austin, Dez Bryant, and Roy Williams. More importantly, their defense contained the high-flying Texans' offense.

The Cowboys get back to .500 here.

Fearless Forecast: Cowboys 24, Titans 14

San Diego Chargers at Oakland Raiders

I dare you to try and stop Antonio Gates.

It cannot be done. Throughout the first four weeks of the season, Gates has been an absolute monster, reeling in six touchdowns. Nobody has been able to find a way to stop him, and oh, how I wish he was on my fantasy team.

The big storyline of today is if the Chargers can win their first road game of season. They have lost their first two, and a loss here would drop them to 0-2 in the AFC West.

The Raiders were supposed to be a sleeper team this season; remember Jason Campbell? The guy they traded for that was supposed to bring stability to that offense?

He got benched the first game of the season.

Philadelphia Eagles at San Francisco 49ers

If the 49ers lose this game and drop to 0-5, I predict Mike Singletary gets fired.

I just don't see how he could stick around anymore. After many pegged this team to win the NFC West and be a surprise team in the conference, the Niners have done nothing to help that cause, starting 0-4.

The pressure will be eased off of Singletary, at least for one week.

This is also coming from an Eagles fan, who I'm picking to lose this game.

The Eagles have major problems at the offensive line and stopping the run. With Michael Vick out with a rib injury, the Eagles will get to see Kevin Kolb, who they expected all offseason.

This is Kolb's chance to prove he is worth what they paid him.

Brett Favre returns to the Big Apple Monday Night, in which he spent one forgettable year to his storied career.

Yes, this return isn't quite as emotional as his to Green Bay, or McNabb's to Philadelphia, but Jets fans will let Favre know how they feel about him.

The Vikings are coming off a bye week and struggling at wide receiver without Sidney Rice. All that could change with the return of Randy Moss as a Viking.

Favre has long desired to play with Moss and got his wish.

Putting aside a bad first week, the Jets are playing among the league's best right now, and Mark Sanchez has been on a tear, throwing for eight touchdowns and zero interceptions. Not to mention the play of LaDainian Tomlinson, who is showing the rest of the NFL that he indeed has a lot left in the tank.

Does Favre light up the Jets as he lit up the Packers? I don't think so.

Sanchez will out-duel Favre, as the Jets win their fourth straight.
