Yankees Win 1st Game of Double Header
It was a bit of a wild game, but the Yankees came out on top in the 10th inning when Brett Gardner scored from second on an infield single that was thrown away by second baseman Bill Hall to give them to a 6-5 lead that Mariano Rivera preserved for the save.
Here are some highlights:
- It was a so-so start for Andy Pettitte who only lasted 4 innings but struck out 8.
- The offense was clicking, except with runners in scoring position.
- They also had 7 walks as a team, but they left 12 runners on base though.
- Derek Jeter, Mark Teixeira, and Robinson Cano had multi-hit games, Cano had 3 hits.
- The big inning was the 3rd inning against Tim Wakefield when Curtis Granderson tripled, Alex Rodriguez picked up an RBI ground out, and then Robinson Cano homered.
- They scored two more in the 5th thanks to Teixeira and Cano.
- Phil Hughes was very sharp in just 1 inning, picking up 2 strikeouts and his 18th win of the year.

Yankees Call Up 6'7" Prospect 📈
So Hughes will finish the season with 18 wins. Very impressive for his first full season in the rotation, especially for a guy who had to fight for his rotation spot in spring training.
In Pettitte’s defense the strike zone was quite small early. He got almost no low strikes called.
The bullpen was certainly taxed in this one. The Yankees needed David Robertson, Boone Logan, Joba Chamberlain, Kerry Wood, Hughes, and Mo to hold the Sox back. Not a good thing for the first game of a double header.
The Rays are currently beating the Royals so the Yankees will have to win tonight to control their own destiny and the American League East.
