Philadelphia Eagles: Redemption for Michael Vick...Is It All Over-Hyped?

Josh McCainOct 1, 2010

This Sunday the Washington Redskins will travel to Philadelphia to take on the Michael Vick lead Eagles.

Many sports writers have been going gaga that past three weeks over the resurgence of Michael Vick's career.

And Sunday afternoon it seems that it will all come full circle.

Much like the climactic scene aboard the Death Star in Star Wars: A New Hope, the student will face off against his teacher.

Mike Vick will be on opposite ends of the quarterback he's sat behind and learned from since his return to the NFL.

Vick took the sagging Eagles offense under Kevin Kolb and has turned it into an exciting and explosive show.

Meanwhile McNabb brings in a Redskin offense that is just as capable of exploding as Philly's but is less consistent.

If the Eagles are victorious on Sunday (and by all accounts they should be) then talk of Michael Vick's renaissance will hit biblical levels.

Even in America where we all deserve a second chance I still find it troubling rooting for Michael Vick.

First off let me start by saying that I believe it is right and just that the NFL did allow Vick back into the league.

Like I said this is America where everyone deserves a second chance, and after all, he served his time and has supposedly come out a better person.

However, just because the man went to prison and has been rehabilitated doesn't mean that I have to get all caught up in everything Michael Vick, and see his play on the field as some sort of redemption.

Frankly I think what he did to those dogs was despicable and had he not been caught I believe he'd still be doing it.

But like I said I have nothing against him coming back into the league and doing what he can to make sure he stays a starter, but unlike many in the media (especially the four letter network) I'm not going to pretend that his resurgence would make a great Disney or made for television movie because it wouldn't.

Vick has always been a good football player, so I don't know why anyone is surprised by his play on the field.  He's doing what he always did in Atlanta.  Buying time with his legs until someone gets open and if that doesn't happen he just takes off.

Writers all over the place are acting like his skill sets would just disappear because of his time away from the game.

Are you kidding me?

Great athletes while still in shape will always be great athletes, it's not like Vick blew up to Jamarcus Russell size while in prison.

No, he stayed in shape and while sitting behind McNabb and Kolb he continued to get in better shape.

Vick is still what he always was, a good quarterback who can run like a wide-out.

In the end all of this hype around Vick's resurgence isn't something to get excited over (unless you're an Eagles fan) because anyone with half a brain should realize that what he's doing isn't any different from what he did before prison.

Just like when Plaxico Burress finally gets out of prison (and if he's reinstated in the NFL), I fully expect him to pick up where he left off, and I won't be surprised by it.

A tip of the cap to Vick for making the most of his opportunity, but honestly is anyone really surprised that he's better than Kolb?
