The San Antonio Spurs Should Give Tony Parker a Chance

Jess Matthew BeltranSep 30, 2010

9 years ago a young Tony Parker played one on one against the Spurs scout and ex-NBA player Lance Blanks. He was overwhelmed with Blanks physical defense and toughness that Coach Gregg Popovich was ready to send him packing within just 10 minutes. But Popovich gambled on Parker and after drafting him as their 28th pick in 2001, Parker went on to become one of the top point guards in the league. 3 NBA titles, one finals MVP and 3 All-star appearances, Parker was the constant fixture in the Spurs line-up but as another season is coming and his 6 year $66 million contract is coming into a conclusion. The Spurs is looking to trade Parker…

Tony had already made up his mind… He will stay and retire as a member of the San Antonio Spurs.

He never entertained the thought of him playing with another team it has already been his way of life, his daily routine and his home. He wants title number four with Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili. And with Duncan turning 35 this could be their one last chance in winning a championship.
But the Spurs remained mum about Parker’s future with the team. After a series of injuries a cloud of uncertainties started to question Tony’s abilities. It was always been his speed and quickness that made a difference and somehow with all the injuries, Tony seems to be a step slower now and with the emergence of the 24 year old George Hill it looks like the future is becoming unclear.

Parker after injuring his hand last season still averages a decent 16 points per game and came off the bench throughout April still has Coach Popovich confidence.Teams are still interested in signing and trading with Parker. Right now he is the only viable player in the roster to get a high profile trade on teams needing to boost their line-up.

Tony Parker wants to stay with the Spurs and he only needs one more chance to prove that he can still lead this team to another championship run. Why not gamble on Parker again this time? After all it was all worth it when they gambled on Tony 9 years ago.
