Cleveland Browns: Jerome Harrison Questions Role on Offense

Daniel WolfSep 29, 2010

The Cleveland Browns are 0-3 in this 2010 NFL regular season. Once again they are hanging out in the basement of the AFC North.

After three games fans and sports writers are calling out the Browns' coaching staff, the wide receivers, the pass rush, and most recently, cornerback Eric Wright.

The backlash of being 0-3 is nasty.

But this is Cleveland Browns football and it has been this way for many years now.

The only thing fans know right now is that Josh Cribbs and Peyton Hillis need to have the ball in their hands as much as possible.

What about 2009 stand out Jerome Harrison?

This year he has fumbled the ball too many times, not ran the ball productively, and hurt his thigh which caused him to miss the third game against the Baltimore Ravens.

In a Cleveland.com interview Harrison was asked about his role now that Hillis is the featured back on the offense.

"I never knew what my role was, so I can't answer that question," said Harrison.

What?!

He never knew what he role was. That is a direct result of the coaching staff who apparently do not favor Harrison. When the Browns acquired Hillis and drafted injured rookie Montario Hardesty in the offseason, the Browns looked ready to move on without Harrison.

In the following quote, Harrison was asked if his touches will decrease on Sundays.

"I don't anticipate anything and I don't expect anything," said Harrison. "We'll just see what happens."

Hillis has the hot hand right now. Don't forget NFL stands for, "Not For Long." That does not mean that Hillis will keep the hot hand as defenses will be teeing off on him on game day.

Harrison's place is unknown. Since he is only on a one-year contract, it looks like he may not be wearing an orange helmet beyond 2010.

Head Coach Eric Mangini must not realize that he is and has been on the hot seat. He still does not utilize the little talent that is on this Browns roster. More loses will build up if Mangini cannot play the players who give him the best chance to win games more.

Harrison may not be a featured back. But he still has value as a change-of-pace back once Hillis is done beating up the defense. His speed will help wear out defenses.

Mangini may never learn. If he doesn't, he may lose his job. What is more important to Mangini right now?

It should be his job. If he fails as a coach in Cleveland, he'll be hard pressed to find a head coaching position in the NFL for a very long time.
