Stats: Robinson Cano Struggling in September

Bronx Baseball DailySep 26, 2010

Entering the home stretch, Robinson Cano had an outside chance of winning the MVP award. Sure, Miguel Cabrera and Josh Hamilton were daunting opponents, but a hot month could put him right up there with both of them.

However it has been the exact opposite story for Cano. Even with Hamilton injured for most of the month and Cabrera experiencing his own fade, Cano has fallen even further behind the MVP running.

Here are Cano’s numbers since September 1:

22 G, 25-for-92 (.272), 8 R, 3 2B, 2 HR, 14 RBI, 6 BB, 13 SO, .316 OBP, .370 SLG, .686 OPS.

Those numbers aren’t terrible, but are no where near MVP numbers and his lack of power in the middle of the lineup has really hurt the Yankees offense. If the definition of an MVP is a player who contributes the most to his team, Cano could be in the running for LVP, as in least valuable player, for the month of September.

At the time where the Yankees need to be at their most consistent and most powerful, Cano has shrunk from the picture and that is not an MVP.
