Philadelphia QB Controversy: Michael Vick Could Save the Eagles' Season

Patrick SkehillSep 23, 2010

Andy Reid and the Philadelphia Eagles’ front office threw all of their metaphorical eggs in one basket this off-season when they decided to ship out Franchise Quarterback Donovan McNabb to a division rival and start Kevin Kolb.  However, Week 1, the football Gods gave them another chance to reallocate their eggs.  After some lackluster play, a concussion forced Kolb out of the game.  Insert Mike Vick.

Michael Vick is the most exciting player in the NFL.  Period.  After two weeks of stellar play, the Eagles were faced with a very early Quarterback controversy.  Do they go with the player they dubbed as their franchise quarterback or with a proven mobile veteran.  This controversy was a blessing.  It provided the Eagles the opportunity to win games with an unconventional, but proven quarterback.  Sure, Kolb is Reid’s ideal quarterback.  But it’s really the “idea” of the pocket passer Kolb that Reid likes.  Sure, it’s hard to argue against Kolb when looking at the games he filled in for the great Donovan McNabb, but it’s even harder to argue against wins.  That’s Michael Vick’s specialty.  He makes plays that win games and that’s what’s important.

This week, just a day after Reid said Kolb was his Week 3 starter; Reid changed his mind and will go with Michael Vick this weekend against Jacksonville.  Kolb would probably be a more than adequate starter this season, especially this week, but Vick's play proved he has earned the job.

Amidst the Dog-fighting controversy from a few years ago, it seemed that Vick’s star had fallen and his likability had significantly dropped.  However with his resurgence this year, it seems most are rooting for him to succeed.  Vick has a chance to challenge Wes Welker for Comeback Player of the Year this season if he does what I believe he can, and lead the Eagles to the playoffs.  After all, wins are all the matter in the NFL, and wins are what Vick brings to the table.  Well, that and a whole lot of excitement.
