Michael Vick, Vincent Jackson: The Top 10 NFL Week 3 Schedule Storylines

Brian DiTullioSep 23, 2010

It's time to look at the storylines running through the NFL Week 3 schedule this week. You have Michael Vick, Vincent Jackson, and a New York Jets team without Darrelle Revis.

Week 3 also has the possibility for upsets galore as teams riding high on 2-0 may come crashing down.

On the flipside, there probably will be at least one 0-2 team to claw its way to their first win.

The drama never ends in the NFL, but that's a good thing because this is entertainment.

Eagles starting quarterback Kevin Kolb basically was benched after one half and a concussion.

Michael Vick rides to the rescue, almost wins the game versus the Packers and then helped the team to a victory over the Lions last week.

Head coach Andy Reid now is facing a lot of scrutiny for flip-flopping on his decision as to who will start this weekend in Jacksonville.

"There's not a thing that changed with Kevin Kolb," said Reid. "This was all about Michael Vick and the way he has played the game. It's that simple. He has played as outstanding as any quarterback in the league to this point."

Reid thinks Vick gives him the best chance to win Sunday. It's that simple. He better be right or the fickle fans of Philadelphia will be calling for Reid's head on a platter Monday morning.

Does It Matter Who Starts At Quarterback For The Pittsburgh Steelers?

You'll get just about any rational Steelers fan to admit their offensive line isn't an elite one in the league.

Despite this setback, the Steelers are 2-0, mainly on the strength of a defense that is playing on a whole other level.

So this begs the question on if it matters who the starting quarterback is. If the defense is going to keep the other team from scoring, and the Steelers can get some points out of special teams and turnovers, it may as well be Mark Malone behind center because this team is going to win.

Vincent Jackson, We Hardly Knew Ye

The Vincent Jackson saga continues to get uglier and uglier.

Now the Chargers could be faced with a situation where his continued absence becomes a very big drag on the team.

Jackson is a victim of the collective bargaining agreement and the one-year tender he refused to sign.

The Chargers were relying on Jackson to be one of quarterback Philip Rivers' main targets this year, but Jackson decided to stand his ground with the organization.

The argument has become toxic, and you can bet if the offense sputters this week, Chargers fans could be joining Phili fans in the "Bring Me His Head On A Platter" crusade, except their anger will be directed solely at general manager A.J. Smith.

The Jets Don't Have Darrelle Revis, This Could Be Bad

Until and unless the Jets secondary stops the Dolphins passing attack on Sunday, this will be the storyline of the Jets/Dolphins game.

There are a ton of other questions and factors that should be mentioned as well such as consistency from Mark Sanchez and the offense, just how good are the Dolphins, etc., but Revis Island is where the headlines are.

Speaking Of QB Controversies, How About Them Raiders?

The Jason Campbell experiment lasted almost two games, so it's a good thing head coach Tom Cable has a lot of patience with his quarterbacks.

As with any major decision involving the Raiders, you have to wonder if Cable made that decision, or if the Crypt Keeper did. It's a legitimate question.

Cable already has denied Al Davis' involvement, but that's to be expected, it doesn't mean it's true.

"The reasons are pretty simple," Cable said. "First and foremost is the energy and the level of intensity that was brought into the huddle when he came into the game. The way the guys responded around him. And, obviously, scoring points. ... That's what we're about. If we can get this thing to where we can score 24 points a game, I think we'll be very tough to beat."

With the season still so young, why wasn't Gradkowski named the starter out of the gate? Weren't any of these sparks from Gradkowski apparent in preseason?

Eric Mangini Needs A Win, Only Ray Lewis And Joe Flacco Stand In His Way

Cleveland Browns team president Mike Holmgren decided to keep Eric Mangini for the 2010 season despite all the problems of the 2009 season.

Now all the positive traits Mangini was supposed to bring to the team as a head coach are gone as the team is turning over the ball and committing penalties on a regular basis.

It's really not too early to say Mangini is on the hot seat, but a contest versus the Baltimore Ravens and Ray Lewis is not going to make Mangini's seat any cooler.

To make matters worse, Ravens QB Joe Flacco is on his way to having a good year and the Browns defense is on the field so much, they're wearing out in the fourth quarter.

It's going to be an ugly day for Cleveland fans.

The Vikings Are Searching For A Win, Hope

MINNEAPOLIS - SEPTEMBER 19: Quarterback Brett Favre #4 of the Minnesota Vikings is sacked by Kendall Langford #70 of the Miami Dolphins during the second half of the game on September 19, 2010 at Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minnesota. (

Brett Favre has looked old and out-of-step the first two games, he has no one to throw to, and the Lions are hungry.

While the Lions still are early in the rebuilding process, they've got a lot of potential to win this game with Jahvid Best, Calvin Johnson, and Ndamukong Suh on defense.

The Vikings have to find a way to put it all together or the Lions will get their first victory of the year.

The Saints Are Without Reggie Bush, Does It Matter?

The Saints insist the injury to Reggie Bush won't hamper their offense.

Riiiiigggghhhhht.

Quarterback Drew Brees is good at distributing the ball, but you just don't take a talent like Bush off of the field and expect there won't be consequences.

Is Vince Young the Next Starting QB To Be Benched?

9 of 10

Vince Young already has been benched in his career at Tennesee, so don't think head coach Jeff Fisher won't do it again.

While the Steelers defense already has been discussed, the Titans needed to see a better performance out of Young last week, and that fire will be turned up this week in New York.

Mike Singletary Has To Prove He Can Coach The 49ers To A Victory

10 of 10

There were a lot of mistakes made on the sideline in Week 1.

The 49ers lost that game, and then came up just short against the New Orleans Saints in Week 2.

Head coach Mike Singletary has to clear the clutter, keep the team focused and not worry about any kind of communication problem or internal strife.

Singletary will be the focus of color commentary on Sunday, and the pressure now is on for him to coach the 49ers to a win.
