Buffalo Bills Brass Missed The Boat Concerning Quarterback Situation

Brian MazurekSep 21, 2010

It's only two weeks into the National Football League season and there's already doubts and confusion concerning the Buffalo Bills and their quarterbacks.

Let's look at the quarterback situation during the off-season and around draft time. Michael Vick, now the Eagles' starter, could have been had for basically nothing. Donovan McNabb was on the market and the Bills' elected to sit on their hands. How about Brady Quinn, Derek Anderson? Nope..not good enough.

And to draft a quarterback? Tim TebowSam Bradford, Jimmy Clausen. Nope...not interested. Let's draft Levi Brown in the seventh round. What is doing now? Not on the Buffalo roster. Not even on the practice squad. He's probably in the south packing groceries somewhere.

Then before training camp, Head Coach Chan Gailey stated there's an "open competition" for the starting quarterback position between Trent Edwards, Brian Brohm and Ryan Fitzpatrick.

When training camp began, it became quiet obvious that there wasn't a real competition...Edwards had already been selected the start. Truthfully, he was the best quarterback in the exhibition games, but was there really any pressure on him that he HAD to produce?

Now two weeks into the season, General Manager Buddy Nix and Gailey have egg on their faces. Edwards has been yanked out of the starting lineup and will be replaced by Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick probably has a two week leash on him and then it's Brohm's turn.

Nix is allegedly a "talent guru". Well if Nix thought Edwards, Brohm or Fitzpatrick were any better than all the previous names I suggested earlier in this article, someone better call a moving van cause his time in Buffalo with Gailey will be very short.

Vick, McNabb or a top draft pick would have excited the team and Western New York. But watching the woeful offense the first two weeks just makes my blood boil as the off-season and pre-season were a total waste.

No moves were made. There was no "real" quarterback competition...Edwards was already the starter. Now, a quarterback change after weeks and weeks of anticipation and hope.

Now with the games counting, Edwards has reverted back to his usual self. If Gailey and Nix thought he might have turned the corner, they both missed the boat. Edwards is not an NFL quarterback, something most everyone knew going into this season.

And rookie running back C.J. Spiller? Such a promising pre-season and he's now going to see his career slowly spin down the Buffalo toilet. He barely saw the field in the past game and a half.

Buffalo a career ender? Just ask Lee Evans!!!!
