Chicago Bears: 10 Things We Learned in Their Victory over The Dallas Cowboys

Bryan DietzlerSep 21, 2010

The Chicago Bears met the Dallas Cowboys in Dallas and in a game where many of the media, experts and even fans figured the Bears didn’t have much of a chance to win, the Bears pulled out 27-20 victory and took their record to 2-0.

The game started out rough for the Bears as the offensive line could not protect quarterback Jay Cutler against the Cowboy’s blitz and even suffered an injury to left tackle Chris Williams (hamstring) early.  But the team was able to adapt and overcome and end up beating one of the toughest teams in the NFL.

Here are ten things that we learned about the Bears during their game with the Cowboys this past Sunday.

Jay Cutler Is Getting Better

You can’t deny that Cutler has gotten a lot better when you compare him to last year.  Granted, he made a couple mistakes against the Lions last week but this week he didn’t have any interceptions, he knew when to throw the ball away and he didn’t try to do too much.  He had an outrageous passer rating (136.7) and is really making some smart decisions.  If he can keep this up, the Bears offense may end up being unstoppable.

D.J. Moore Is Here!

Did you ever wonder why the Bears drafted Moore?  If you had seen him in college, you would have realized that Moore was a play-maker (albeit undersized) and could be a good pro in the right system.  Instead of giving him a chance last season, the Bears decided to sit him and let him watch.  Now, acting as the Bears nickel back, the Bears have found a home for him and he came through well with two interceptions and help in causing another.  Granted, it’s just one game but Moore has a promising career with the Bears and gives them yet another weapon to help win games on defense.

Devin Hester Is a Playmaker

It was disappointing to see Hester not get too many opportunities last week but this week against the Cowboys, Hester made one of the best plays of his career (at the wide receiver position) and helped the offense stretch the field.  They definitely need to keep him involved in the offense and get the ball to him more often.

The Bears Are Deep at Wide Receiver

Last week, wide receiver Devin Aromashodu made several critical catches but dropped a sure touchdown pass which may have landed him in the coach’s doghouse.  Instead of putting him on the field this Sunday, they moved Earl Bennett into his spot and Bennett had a pretty good game.  What we saw with this move is that the Bears do have some depth at the wide receiver position being much deeper than we thought when they started this season.

Devin Hester Shouldn’t Be Returning Punts

Hester needs to learn that he should go north and south instead of east and west when returning punts and after not doing well with it against the Lions, Hester laid another egg returning punts this week.  Perhaps they should take him off of punt return duty, have him concentrate on being a wide receiver and put someone else back there like Bennett or Moore.

The Bears “D” Is Solid

There were a lot of people who were skeptical after the Bears game against the Lions in believing that the Bears defense was a solid unit.  They felt that because the Bears had played the lowly Lions, the defense couldn’t be called on of the better defenses in the NFL.  However, after seeing them play the Cowboys and seeing them play well, people should start believing that this defense is something special.

We saw this when left tackle Chris Williams went out with a hamstring injury during the game.  The Bears did some reshuffling on the offensive line and after some trial and error, came up with a combination that worked pretty well for them the rest of the game.  Let’s just hope that this can hold up if Williams is out for an extended period of time.

There Are Problems on Special Teams

I had stated last week that it appeared as if the special team’s problems were over for the Bears.  However, after a 62 yard punt return for a touchdown by Cowboy’s rookie wide receiver made problems on special teams rear their ugly head and give fans some concern.  Hopefully the Bears will be able to fix their problems on special teams and get things back to their usual best on that unit.

The Preseason Doesn’t Matter, Does It?

Remember when the Bears went winless in the preseason and many people, including myself, felt that this team would have a rough go of it this season?  Granted, they Bears have only played two games so far this season but for a team that went winless during the preseason this only proves that those preseason games really don’t matter to much when it comes to the regular season.

Chicago Can Beat Green Bay

Many of you may laugh when you see this but it’s true, the Bears can beat the Packers next Monday night when these two teams get together to play one another.  Both teams are explosive on offense and pretty solid defenses and being a rivalry game, they will both end up playing tough.  The Bears do have enough to win this game but can they do it?

We will soon find out.
