Chael Sonnen's Test Results are In, and the Tests Show Testosterone
Yesterday, the rumors of Chael Sonnen using performance enhancers in his fight against Anderson Silva were finally confirmed.
Many had heard that in fact, an illegal substance was found in a urine sample of Sonnen's during the California State Athletic Commission's post-fight drug test for UFC 117, though few could specify what the drug was that was used.
Until now.
MMA Junkie reported yesterday afternoon that George Dodd of the CSAC confirmed the test results, showing that Sonnen did test positive for elevated levels of testosterone.
As a result, Sonnen will have a 30-day period in which he must at least respond to the CSAC's notice about him failing the drug test.
Should he not respond, Chael could be out of action until September of next year and fined $2,500.
Unquestionably, this new development throws a complete wrench in the discussion of UFC 117's Silva-Sonnen bout, as Sonnen was dominant for almost the entire duration of the fight before getting caught in a triangle armbar which won "Submission of The Night".
With the news of this failed drug test, many are left to wonder if Sonnen still deserve his credence for the effort he put in Oakland, as the effort—while a showing that proved Silva to be human—also came by illegitimate means of personal athletic assistance.
All we can speculate on at this point is to whether or not Sonnen will make the choice to appeal this latest hit of bad news.
As for fans of Sonnen, all we can hope for is that "Silva vs. Sonnen II" will still be possible despite this unfortunate set of circumstances.
