Michael Vick Deserves To Be The Starter in Philadelphia: Quit Dogging Him

Eric StrellerSep 20, 2010

No pun intended in the title by the way, but what in the world is going on in Philly? Can anybody say Tennessee repeat, I think I can but it is worse! I love coaches foolish pride, first with Jeff Fisher of the Titans last year and now Andy Reid is pulling the same damn thing.

I really hope Reid is proud of himself, first off let me say I think Kolb is a serviceable QB which is exactly what I thought about Kerry Collins last year, however, who gives you the better chance to win? In week one against the Packers, Kolb looked like he had never seen a defense before completing 5 of 10 passes and being sacked twice. Enter Mike Vick, who throws for 175 yds, a td, completes 16 of 24 passes, while rushing for 103 yds on 11 attempts. The Eagles lose the game, but make a valiant effort to beat a team who most people picked as a preseason favorite to win a Super Bowl. After the game when Reid was interviewed, he stuck with his number one saying “Kolb will be our starter when he returns”

I, for one, totally agree with this, you do not bail on your number one after one week, since Vick’s performance could have just been a one time blast from the past. Fast forward to week two, Kolb still out, Vick throws for 284 yds, 2 TDs completes 21 of 34 and rushes for 37 yds, oh, and the Eagles WIN. Post game interview, Reid says the same thing he is going to stick with his number one in Kolb.

Digging deeper into this mess Reid has caused, I realize something, Mike Vick is back! The former King of ATL is putting up the numbers again and being more accurate with his throws. So, the question I have is shouldn’t Vick get his due first? I mean he has been through hell and back, although he put himself there. Vick has done all of the necessary things to become comeback player of the year and possibly more, yet Coach Reid rejects him.

In an interview today with ESPN Vick stated he is “OK” with Kolb being the starter. This in my mind just blows me away, it truly shows Vick's maturity level at this stage in his career. Five years ago Vick would have thrown a fit (rightfully so, I might add) and told Reid he could stick it. Now this MAN, this backup QB, broken by the past he created, has rose from the ashes to claim his rightful place in the NFL history books, only to have it thrown back at him by a coach with too much pride.

Will Vick end up being the starter this year, I think so. The real question though, is will it be too late when he is inserted properly into the starting lineup.

Message for Coach Reid,

Mr. Andy Reid,

As a sports fan, an athlete, and as a man there comes a time in our lives when we have to swallow our pride in order to succeed. I suggest you act accordingly or ….
