Glasgow Rangers Fire Four Past Hapless Dundee United In Scottish Premier League

Rangers v Dundee United September 19th 2010

Ibrox Park, Saturday 19th 2010, SPL.

After Rangers midweek bus parking exercise at Manchester United in the Champions League, they were back to their attacking best, firing four goals past Dundee United's defence.

It started well for the visitors when a quick run down the left ended with a rasping shot being saved by an alert Allan McGregor.

On loan Man City starlet, Weiss, was to play a huge part in this match for the Rangers side as time after time he bamboozled the United defenders with his tricks, turns and speed. He was also to get his fair share of shots at goal, with his first chance coming in the first minute but fired wide. This was not to be the last time he would have the home fans on their feet.

It was on 9 minutes though that Rangers would break the deadlock with a well worked cross from the right. The cross came in and seemed to break off one of the United defenders and into the empty net giving the home side the lead.

Weiss was a tricky character every time he had the ball, and on 15 minutes while doing stepovers and ball rolling with his foot, one of the United players took offence to this and promptly halved him, Scottish style.

Weiss was running the show for Rangers and was creating chance after chance for his team mates. Davis was the first to get the opportunity from Weiss but his shot was well saved by the keeper. Next up was Weiss himself as he worked well with Jelavic who back heeled into the path of Weiss on the right but his shot was well saved again by the goalie.

United then had a couple of chances themselves from long route one balls but the closest they came to scoring from them was a glancing header going wide of the post. The Taysiders were to get another chance 5 minutes before half time when a defensive slice landed squarely in the path of a United attacker but shot wide.

Just before the half time whistle went, Rangers had a nice period of play that ended with Jelavic playing in Miller who passed to Davis but his shot was parried past for a corner.

Dundee United kicked off the second half but Jelavic nicked the ball, broke into the box but his snap shot was well saved again by the alert keeper. Less than a minute later Jelavic tried his hand at an overhead kick after Miller had broke down the right but his effort went wide.

Weiss was again making a nuisance of himself down the right, Jelavic getting on the end of his cross but headed wide. Kenny Miller was also a handful for the United defence as he continually ran at his opponents goal area but had been unfortunate not to score, yet!

60 minutes in, McGregor played the ball out to Weiss on the left who jinked his way past 4 defenders before running the ball out of play, but great play by the on loan player.

Whittaker was next to try a mazey run through the defence but his shot from the edge of the box was cleared without troubling the keeper. McCulloch also tried his luck from 20 yards out but the keeper was equal to the shot and kept his side in the match at only one nil to the home side.

However, Rangers got a piece of luck when the chance appeared to have been lost. Davis crossed for Jelavic on the right but when Weiss appeared to collide with his fellow player, the ball broke to an unmarked Kenny Miller who knocked the ball into an open net to give his side a two nil lead with 20 minutes remaining.

This was too much for United as they had little to offer in the way of offence in this match and with 14 minutes remaining, Rangers added another when Naismith rose to head home from a corner and make it three nil for the home side.

Weiss, who was clearly man of the match, added a goal of his own with nine minutes remaining after Davis played him into the box and he fired home to make it a good day at the office for him.

Rangers go top of the table with this result meanwhile Dundee United still struggle to find the form that won them so many plaudits last season.
