Fantasy Football Week 2: Start or Sit Thoughts

Eric StashinSep 19, 2010

Just hours before the start of Week 2, I know many people have questions running through their heads.  Who should I start?  Who should I sit?

Let’s take a look at a few situations to try and settle things:

Randy Moss at New York Jets

It’s easy to be scared of this matchup:

  • The Jets have admitted their mistake from Week 1 and said that Darrelle Revis will shadow Moss.
  • In two games against the Jets in 2009, Moss had just nine receptions for 58 yards and one TD…total.
  • He was less then spectacular in Week 1, with five catches for 59 yards as the Patriots instead utilized the returning Wes Welker.

Even with all of that, does anyone really feel comfortable putting him on their bench, especially with Revis potentially suffering from a hamstring problem?  If Revis is forced to miss any time during the game, after what we saw Anquan Boldin do against Antonio Cromartie and Kyle Wilson in Week 1, is there any doubt that Moss would exploit them?

There’s certainly risk, but there is a tremendous amount of reward involved as well.  Personally, I’d roll the dice on him.  You just don’t bench a borderline first round pick in Week 2 of the season.

Michael Crabtree Vs. New Orleans

He looked awful in Week 1, making us all wonder if the preseason hype was legitimate.  How could a player with so much promise go for just two catches and 12 yards?  It seems almost unfathomable.

You can blame the QB if you’d like.  Maybe throw a little blame towards the offensive coordinator.  The bottom line is that we shouldn’t make drastic decisions based on just one week.  It’s a long season and you drafted him for a reason.  You almost have to give him a chance.

After last week, he certainly has a lot to prove.  I’m not about to predict him going out there and making 10 catches for 100+ yards, but I would expect him to be highly motivated after taking a ton of criticism.  There certainly is potential for a bounce back week, so depending on your other options he’s certainly worth using.

Michael Vick at Detroit
Kevin Kolb is out, leaving Vick to run the Eagles offense.  Obviously, it depends on your other QB options here, as I have him ranked 11th in my updated quarterback rankings for the week (click here to view).

The Lions are certainly a less then stellar defensive team, tying for the most yards allowed in Week 1 at 463.  It’s actually amazing that they only allowed 19 points and came within a questionable call of winning the game.

They weren’t terrible against the run, though they did allow 101 yards.  It was the short passing game that burned them, with Matt Forte going for 151 yards through the air.  The Eagles have always been known as one of the better screen teams in the league, so look for Vick and LeSean McCoy to hook up early and often.

Couple that with his ability to run the football, and Vick is certainly worth rolling the dice on.

What are your thoughts on these three players?  Would you bench any of them?  Why or why not?
