Analysis
I definitely had my highs and lows, thankfully a few more highs.
Nicks proved to be a great call, as he was a top five wide out in week one, but Crabtree certainly wasn't worth a look in ANY league. The defenses were another good choice, and Hightower was serviceable as a number two running back.
Stewart was a great call to sit, and Robinson would've been if not for his one yard touchdown reception. Forsett and Marion Barber were decent at best, but didn't shine for any fantasy squad. McCluster broke off a monster punt return, but still hasn't found a real identity on offense
Final grade: 88/100
Week One: Analysis and Grades For Aaron

Aaron
Starts
Wes Welker
Louis Murphy
Arian Foster
Kyle Orton
Jerome Harrison
Mike Wallace
CJ Spiller
Matt Forte
Sits
Terrell Owens
Darren McFadden
Joseph Addai
Mike Sims-Walker
Kareem Huggins
Matt Ryan
Ricky Williams/Ronnie Brown
Matthew Stafford
Analysis
Aaron's forte is definitely in his sit calls, as he hit seven out of eight, but lacked a little with his "starts".
Owens laid down a fantasy stinker in his first game as a Bengal, as did Addai and MSW. Stafford didn't get enough playing time to even help out a little bit.
Welker was a great call, and Arian Foster was absolutely spot on. Jerome Harrison didn't do much other than his big run, and C.J. Spiller didn't even have a long gallop to boost his stats. Forte was another good call, as he shocked most owners with a 150 yard receiving performance.
Final Grade: 84/100
Baltimore Ravens @ Cincinnati Bengals
3 of 19
Aaron
Start: Anquan Boldin, WR, ARI
Last week Boldin showed us that he’s still a legitimate number one receiver. He ended with seven catches for 110 yards against the Jets secondary.
But keep in mind he wasn’t covered by Revis the entire game. Expect him to have another big game this week against the Bengals.
He should end up with around 80 yards and a score.
Sit Cedric Benson, RB, CIN
I was close to actually putting Cedric Benson into this column as a start for this week, because of how he man-handled the Ravens defense last year.
In the two games that he faced them, Benson rushed for close to 240 yards and scored in both games. But after thinking about it, I decided to bench Benson this week.
There is no way that Baltimore’s defense will let Cedric Benson run over them for a third time in two years. Expect a similar game to last week’s game, around 40-60 yards.
Philadelphia Eagles @ Detroit Lions
4 of 19
Aaron
Start: Michael Vick, QB, PHI
Last week, when Kevin Kolb went down with a concussion, Michael Vick stepped in to replace him, and he came up big.
He threw for 175 yards with a touchdown, and rushed for over 100. Look for Vick to step it up again this week to prove to Andy Reid that he gives the Eagles a better chance to win than Kolb does, and that he should be the number one quarterback on the depth chart.
Sit: LeSean McCoy, RB, PHI
Normally I wouldn’t advocate the benching of any running back against the Lions defense, but McCoy was less than spectacular last week and had only seven carries for 35 yards.
McCoy does still hold value in PPR leagues, last week he managed five catches for 45 yards. Combined those are decent numbers, but I wouldn’t expect too big of a difference this week.
With Vick at quarterback, he’ll be running a lot of option plays and will probably run the ball more than McCoy. Start McCoy in PPR leagues, but be weary in all others.
Arizona Cardinals @ Atlanta Falcons
5 of 19
Aaron
Start: Steve Breaston, WR, ARI
Breaston stepped up last week and proved to his critics that he can be a valuable starting receiver in the NFL.
He hauled in all seven targets and ended up with 135 yards. While the numbers look lopsided between Fitz and Breaston after Week 1, don’t think that Derek Anderson favored Breaston.
He actually threw the ball to Fitzgerald 15 times, but only three were completions. Expect Breaston to continue to benefit from the secondary locking in on Fitzgerald.
Sit: Beanie Wells, RB, ARI
While it is supposed to be a game time decision on whether he starts or not, odds are Wells will be back this week.
Don’t expect Arizona to give him 20 carries or for him to rush for 100 yards, the Cardinals want to take it easy on their young running back and will probably look to hand the ball off to Hightower a lot again this week.
Miami Dolphins @ Minnesota Vikings
6 of 19
Aaron
Start: Visanthe Shiancoe, TE, MIN
Travis pretty much summed it up in our article about the Saints-Vikings season opener. And with nobody else stepping up in Rice’s absence, Shiancoe is now Favre’s most trustworthy target.
It wouldn’t be ridiculous to start him over pretty much any other tight end from here on out, because you know how many targets he’ll get.
Sit: Bernard Berrian, WR, MIN
This season was like the fourth year in a row that Berrian somehow ended up on my team.
Luckily, I was able to sell high before the season opener when he managed one reception for three yards. Many owners swept him up after Rice’s injury, hoping that by default he would do well.
The numbers all added up, Brett Favre as the quarterback, a speedy wide out lined up in the number one spot, he had to get good numbers! But people must have forgotten just how bad he is.
If he’s on your team, drop him right now.
Kansas City Chiefs @ Cleveland Browns
7 of 19
Aaron
Start: Dwayne Bowe, WR, KAN
Bowe had a very forgettable week one. He ended up with only one reception for 13 yards.
This week he’ll be matched up against the Browns defense, and as Matt Cassel’s number one target, expect him to have a decent game, something along the lines of 70 yards and a touchdown.
Sit: Jerome Harrison, RB, CLE
Looks like I was wrong last week, the Browns aren’t going to give a vast majority of the carries to Harrison.
Even with Hardesty out of the picture, the Browns are going to split the carries between Peyton Hillis and Harrison.
Those of you expecting top 10 running back production from Harrison this season have to be worried at this point.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Carolina Panthers
8 of 19
Aaron
Start: Cadillac Williams, RB, TB
Williams had a mediocre Week 1, 22 carries for 75 yards against Cleveland. But with a less than stellar passing game, look for Tampa Bay to run it often on Sunday, and Williams will get close to 25 carries.
The only other player who could steal a few is Earnest Graham, so Williams owners shouldn’t be worried.
Sit: Jonathan Stewart, RB, CAR
He’s so hit or miss depending on whom John Fox decides who to give the ball too. He could easily garner 150 yards and two touchdowns this week, but he could just as easily get six carries for 20 yards.
It’s just too risky to start him.
Jonathan Stewart is a very good running back, but he’s going to lose you just as many games as he will win.
Trade him if you can.
Buffalo Bills @ Green Bay Packers
9 of 19
Aaron
Start: Brandon Jackson, RB, GB
With Grant going on the IR, Brandon Jackson will be getting the bulk of the carries for Green Bay.
Keep in mind that Brandon Jackson isn’t as good as Ryan Grant, so don’t expect him to be a complete replacement, but he should suffice, especially against Buffalo.
There have been some rumors that Green Bay may make a move for Marshawn Lynch, so don’t invest too much into Jackson.
Sit: C.J. Spiller, RB, BUF
Spiller looked awful last Sunday when he averaged less than a yard a carry. He will be good, but maybe he’s just not ready.
Do not start him this week unless he is absolutely your only option.
New Englad Patriots @ New York Jets
10 of 19
Aaron
Start: Randy Moss, WR, NE
This is back to back weeks I’ve said to start one of New England’s pro-bowl caliber receivers. Moss is arguably the best receiver in football and is one of the best of all time.
But this week he’s matched up with Revis. Moss historically has been shut out by the Jets and Revis, but this week he’s going to try to prove that he’s worth a new contract.
Don’t expect typical Randy numbers, but expect him to score and get about 50-60 yards.
This still makes him relevant fantasy-wise.
Sit: Everyone on the Jets Offense EXCEPT Shonn Greene
The Jets offense actually looks pretty bad. Sanchez can't throw to save his life, and none of the receivers are trustworthy.
Greene is the only fantasy relevant player on this offense, and even he is a question mark after an awful Week 1.
Don’t expect big numbers by this offense.
Chicago Bears @ Dallas Cowboys
11 of 19
Travis
Start: Felix Jones, RB, DAL
This is definitely a gutsy call, but if Dallas expects to win these games, they need to do what they're good at, and right now, it's using that three headed monster of a running game and drilling the ball down defensive throats.
You'd think they may have learned from the '07 New York Giants, that a running game with three parts can do nothing but stay fresh, and keep defenses guessing.
I like Jones a lot more than Barber or Choice, but they could definitely steal some valuable carries from Felix, but when it comes down to it, Wade Phillips needs wins, and Jones gives him the best choice.
Sit: Johnny Knox, WR, CHI
I had Knox as my start of the week last week, and it didn't quite pan out.
This one could definitely come back to bite some people, but until Cutler and Knox can get on the same page on the field, he shouldn't be trusted.
If Knox is your flex play, then feel confident deploying him, but if you have two other receivers who you can trust a little more, and know will get some balls their way, then I would leave Johnny on the bench this week (pun absolutely intended).
Pittsburgh Steelers @ Tennesee Titans
12 of 19
Travis
Start: Heath Miller, TE, PITT
Miller is upgraded this week to a definite start in ten or twelve team leagues, for more than one obvious reason. Dennis Dixon is a young and mobile quarterback, and both should favor Miller.
The Titans will probably bring everything but the kitchen sink at DD a few times, and Miller will have space across the middle to work the field and snag a few balls.
It also helps that Tennessee was terrible against the position last season, and Miller should be the first of many tight ends to explode on the Titans.
Sit: Chris Johnson, RB, TENN
Ok, now let's be honest, there is no way, no how that any fantasy owner actually benches Chris Johnson this week.
So why put it here?
I'm putting this up here more as a "I told you so" moment. I think that this is the first week that CJ2K doesn't get 100 yards in a very long time. He currently has the streak at 14 games, and many people have predicted it would end at one point or another, and I'm throwing my hat in the ring for this Sunday.
It wouldn't surprise me at all if Johnson didn't finish in the top twenty of all running backs this week.
Seattle Seahawks @ Denver Broncos
13 of 19
Travis
Although I couldn't find one player I would be comfortable starting this week, I feel like I made up for it by giving you not one, not two, but three guys that definitely SHOULDN'T be started this week.
Sit: Knowshon Moreno, RB, DEN
To be honest, Moreno is probably the one that find the endzone this week, but this game is simply to hard to predict. Is the Seattle defense really that good? Or was Frank Gore and Alex Smith really that bad last Sunday? And of course, don't forget this is the same team that acquired Laurence Maroney from the Patriots.
UPDATE: Maroney is out for Week 2.
Sit: Mike Williams, WR, SEA
I love Williams this year as a deep sleeper, but I can't advise he finds any fantasy lineups this week. It's simply too risky. Williams is going up against Champ Bailey on Sunday, the same Champ Bailey that shut down Sims-Walker in week one.
Look for Williams to break out sometime in 2010, but not this week.
Sit: The Seattle Seahawks Running Backs
Assuming Seattle gets close enough to punch it in, one of these three will most likely have some value this Sunday, but there is no way to trust any of them at this point. I mean, last week they had a combined 21 carries, and they split them up six, seven, and eight. Unless one horse pulls out of the stable a little quicker, the Seattle backs have no place on your starting Sunday lineup.
St. Louis Rams @ Oakland Raiders
14 of 19
Travis
Start: Steven Jackson, RB, STL
I know some people have been a little sketchy on Jackson this year, especially with the hurt back, but he most definitely needs to be in your lineup this Sunday.
This could be S-Jax's best game of the season, and you can bet that Spagnuolo will try his hardest to keep Bradford from throwing the ball fifty times like he did in week one.
Jackson should break out this week, and in a big way.
Sit: Darren McFadden, RB, OAK
This is definitely, yet another risky call, but I don't think that McFadden can be trusted this week. He could easily break out again, but it should be noted that Michael Bush is going to be a game time decision this week, and if he does play, he would steal carries from DMC.
The other problem is, if you don't have another starting running back to plug in, McFadden's game is a 4 o'clock kickoff, so your options will certainly be limited if Bush is a go.
Houston Texans @ Washington Redskins
15 of 19
Travis
Start: Matt Schaub, QB, HOU
I know that someone like Schaub should be an obvious play, but I know that some people have hit the waiver wire this week for guys like Favre or Vick.
Schaub had a rough Week 1, because Arian Foster was able to single handedly destroyed the Colts with his crushing ground game.
Washington did a good job holding Romo in check, but I think they will over focus on Foster, and allow Schaub to beat them through the air.
Stay strong Matty S owners. I know I am.
Sit: Clinton Portis, RB, WAS
In all my years of playing fantasy football, there are always certain guys that you don't get on your team. For whatever reason it may be, for example, you don't think they are worth the draft pick, or you simply don't like the player.
Clinton Portis has always been one of those guys for me.
I know he is, or was, a good running back, who could produce big numbers this season, but I don't think he does against Houston.
They did a damn good job shutting down Joseph Addai and Donald Brown, and I don't think Clinton Portis is much better than the former—and is approaching the level of the latter.
Jacksonville Jaguars @ San Diego Chargers
16 of 19
Travis
Start: Malcom Floyd, WR, SD
Ok, this time, it's for real.
I'm not buying into Legedu Naanee just yet. I think Floyd can really break out this week, and show teams why they bothered to draft him as a Vincent Jackson replacement.
I think a lot of this is the mentality that the Chargers as an organization are having right now. This is the final game they will play before they are forced to trade Vincent Jackson, or most likely, hang onto him for the rest of the year.
For that reason, I believe they owe it to themselves to know if Floyd is a big time receiver, and if he can stand in for Vincent Jackson or not. Look for Floyd to have a big game.
Sit: Marcedes Lewis, TE, JAX
A lot of people have jumped on Lewis after he scored two touchdowns in his first game of the year, but if you happened to stumble upon the box score, you would have noticed that those were his only catches in the game.
I know that San Diego doesn't cover the TE well, as seen in the first week against Kansas City, and even last season when they ranked in the bottom half of points against.
I just think that there are much better tight end plays in Week 2.
New York Giants @ Indianapolis Colts
17 of 19
Travis
Start: Steve Smith, WR, NYG
Hakeem Nicks was the breakout threat on the Giants in Week 1, and even Mario Manningham had a better game than Smitty, but I think that it all boils down to one name that makes Smith a must start this week against Indy.
Kevin Boss.
Boss will miss the game with a concussion, and Smith should return to form as a masterful slot receiver, and should even get more of the red zone looks than he normally gets from Manning.
Nicks is still a great play, but Smith should be more than serviceable, and if anything, at least perform better than he did in the game against Carolina.
Sit: Pierre Garcon, WR, IND
It's not so much the fact that I dislike Garcon, its more that I like Austin Collie a lot more.
The G-Men can't cover the middle of the field well, and Clark and Garcon should get plenty of looks, especially after the front seven makes a job of shutting down Addai and Brown, which shouldn't be too difficult at all.
Antrelle Rolle and Kenny Phillips achor one of the best young safety duo's in the league, and I think they do a good job of helping the young corner's cover Garcon.
New Orleans Saints @ San Francisco 49'ers
18 of 19
Travis
Start: Marques Colston, WR, NO
It's always risky to highlight a singular weapon in the Saints offense, but after my correct prediction of Devery Henderson in week one, I figured I would try to make it a habit.
The Niners did an average job of shutting down the Seattle running game last Sunday, and I think on Monday night they try and do the same to Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush.
That means Brees will have to let it fly—I'm sure that's OK with him.
Sit: Michael Crabtree, WR, SF
I had Crabtree as a start last week, and he royally let me down by laying quite the bomb.
Two receptions. Twelve yards. Yikes!
I think that Crabtree will end up being a good wide receiver, but I was always cautious of throwing so much hope to a possession receiver from a school that ran a spread offense.
Alex Smith can't be trusted, but he also can't take all the blame for Crabtree not living up to expectations. Until he proves he can be an ally on your fantasy team, leave him on the pine.
Go Forth! Fantasy Fools!
19 of 19
Week 2 looks to be quite exciting, with great match ups all around.
A lot of the studs that were drafted in the first few rounds are playing in the early games, with only a handful of the fantasy relevants playing later on [See: Wes Welker, Randy Moss, Ryan Mathews, and Matt Schaub].
Always be ready to hit the waiver wire, as those people who picked up Brandon Jackson know, moves on Wednesday can be the ones that will make or break your season.
Good luck readers.
Travis Rand is a Communications Major at the University of Southern Maine, and an enormous NYG and Oklahoma Sooners fan.
He also thinks that you should throw your hat in the ring for Ryan Broyles Heisman Canidancy. Although, he's changing his view on Denard Robinson. It will all come down to Pryor vs Robinson in the final week of the NCAA season. Maybe these two will find their way onto fantasy teams in the coming years.
