In comparison to last year’s team, there really isn’t a heck of a lot left in purple and orange right now. Clemson is a mess with both Scotty Cooper (left team) and CJ Spiller (graduation) no longer in the fold.

The offense does have respectable numbers this year with 418.5 yards and 46.5 points per game on the board, but this is a team that didn’t look sparkling against either the North Texas Mean Green or the Presbyterian Blue Hose to start the year. If you can’t look amazing against one of the worst FCS teams in the land, you have some real issues.

Kyle Parker eschewing the Colorado Rockies and a baseball career was supposed to be the shot in the arm that Clemson needed to excel. He has done anything but so far, throwing for just 284 yards and four scores in two games. Parker is only completing 57.7 percent of his passes, and no one on the team has triple digits in receiving yards as of yet.

Meanwhile for the other Tigers in this cat fight, Cam Newton is proving to be an excellent investment. The former Florida Gator transferred just at the right time, and he is starting to emerge as a Heisman Trophy candidate and will continue to do so for as long as Auburn is winning.

A 17-14 win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs last week wasn’t the greatest game in the world for Newton, but accounting for 206 yards and two TDs in a tightly run contest against an SEC foe on the road is worth noting.

Head coach Gene Chizik might want to work Onterio McCalebb into the offense more. He has touched the pigskin 21 times on offense and 11 on special teams and has already accounted for 416 all purpose yards in just two games.

NCAA Football Insider Tip: Clemson is 2-6 ATS in its L/8 tries against SEC foes.

This Tiger tale is unlikely to be a pretty for one for the visitors. Clemson just doesn’t have enough in the tank to go into hostile road territory and win a game like this. These two teams have never met in the preseason before, but in two bowl games, Auburn holds a 2-0 SU and 1-0-1 ATS advantage.

Look for that mark to get improved by one come Saturday, as Cam Newton leads Auburn to a win against the lines for college football on Saturday.

My NCAA Football Predictions: Auburn Tigers (-7) -110
