How the Toronto Maple Leafs Can Save Themselves

Bleacher ReportAug 11, 2008

The Toronto Maple Leafs may be going to another year of disappointment.

The Maple Leafs have been trying to figure out how to fix the struggling team since they last one the Stanley Cup. This year may be the same as interim GM Cliff Fletcher didn't make many moves in the off-season. He did say that he would make changes, but they wern't going to be big. He proved himself correct on both of those statements. However when he said that their were going to be changes I thought that they would ensure the playoffs this coming season.

Could Pittsburgh Trade for Nurse? 🤔

Grabovski, Frogren, Schenn, Joseph, Hagman, Hollweg, Mayers, Finger, Kulemin, Wilson, Zettler, and Hunter.

Out

Raycroft, Tucker, Wozniewski, Pohl.

The may not have lost much but most of what they did was at least boarder line talent. Raycroft set a new Leaf record with most wins as a goalie, Tucker had one bad season, Wozniewski pitched in once and Pohl was always dependable. The players that they received are good, but not great. A team with a lot of ok players can't win. A team with a lot of good players can. Toronto did get some good out of those players however. They will help improve the team a bit while also getting some up-and-coming talent like Luke Schenn, Mikhail Grabovski, and Nik Kulemin.

If Toronto has any chance at making the playoffs this season its not a good one, and they will have to battle even harder every night. If they make the plaoffs they will finish 8th, about 2 points in. Just like the 2006-2007 season, except then they were out by one point.

They were also able to get new head coach Ron Wilson, and his old assistants in San Jose, but new in Toronto, Tim Hunter and Rob Zettler, while still holding on to Keith Acton. Good job with the coaching Toronto.

So they have salvaged some of the good.

However, what they havn't done is what I think really needs to get done (and a lot of you might agree with this one (and its not find a new GM)).

     Fire Richard Peddie.

Yes, Richard Peddie did fire John Ferguson Jr. and hire Cliff Fletcher, but remember, he fired Pat Quinn, and hired John Ferguson Jr., a move that a lot of people didn't like.
