Fantasy Football Week 2: Power Ranking Top 50 Point Scorers of Week
Week 2 of fantasy football season is almost upon us, which means it's time to take a long hard look at the matchups and figure out just who is going to be putting up the big points for your fantasy team.
Will it be the proven players who stand out in week 2? Or will new, unexpected sources emerge from the waiver wire?
Here are the top 50 point producers from Week 2.
50. Mason Crosby, K, Green Bay Packers
1 of 50
Why He's Here: Crosby is a good, accurate kicker on a team that's going to give him lots of chances.
The Matchup: Miami's defense isn't anything special. Crosby should have a couple field goals and a bunch of extra points in this one.
How He'll Do: 10 points.
49. Green Bay Packers D/ST
2 of 50
Why They Here? The Packers defense is as nasty as they come, and they have the potential for a big game every week.
What's the Matchup? The Pack get a Bills team who couldn't run the ball or throw the ball against the Dolphins, an inferior defensive unit. Expect some carnage come Sunday.
How Will They Do? Look for lots of sacks, and a couple of picks this week. Will they give up points? Not that many. 13 points out of the Packers' defense this week.
48. Dwayne Bowe, WR, Kansas City Chiefs
3 of 50
Why He's Here: The Chiefs were one of the surprise winners in week 1, and Bowe is their best wideout. Hence, he gets himself a place in the top 50.
What the Matchup Means: Bowe didn't have a great night on Monday, with just one catch for 13 yards. But no one in the passing game for Kansas City had a good game in those swamp-like conditions, and the Browns don't have anything resembling a pass defense. Look for quarterback Matt Cassel to utilize Bowe's speed and size by going over the top to him a few times.
How He'll Do: 13 points. five catches, 70 yards, and a score. If you're in a PPR (point-per reception) league, that's 18 points.
47. Knowshon Moreno, RB, Denver Broncos
4 of 50
Why He's Here: Moreno is healthy, and is the Broncos' primary rusher, even with the team's pickup of Laurence Maroney. He's got the playmaking skills to be a big performer week in and week out.
The Matchup: Seattle stymied Frank Gore last week, but they also bullied Alex Smith into submission. Don't expect Kyle Orton to give up his lunch money so easily, forcing the Seahawks to respect the pass.
How He'll Do: 14 points between rushing and receiving. Gore had a good game catching the ball last week, so don't be surprised to see Orton utilize Moreno to keep the hard charging Seahawks at bay.
46. David Garrard, QB, Jacksonville Jaguars
5 of 50
Why He's Here: Garrard has been a consistent backup fantasy quarterback option since he became Jacksonville's starter in 2008. He's solid, but unspectacular.
The Matchup: The Chargers don't have the weapons in the secondary to close down Mike Sims Walker completely like Denver did last week, and Garrard still had a solid game. Expect him to thoroughly enjoy the Chargers defense.
How He'll Do: 14 points. Like I said, he's Mr. Consistent.
45. Ryan Mathews, RB, San Diego Chargers
6 of 50
Why He's Here: Mathews had a strong debut against the Chiefs last week, racking up 75 yards rushing on 19 carries, despite the Chargers having to throw the ball the entire second half.
The Matchup: The Jaguars gave up essentially the same number of rushing yards to Knowshon Moreno in Week 1 as Kansas City gave up to Mathews. So, it stands to reason that he'll get similar production.
How He'll Do: 14 points, from 85 yards rushing and a touchdown. The score makes all the difference.
44. Brandon Marshall, WR, Miami Dolphins
7 of 50
Why He's Here: When he's happy and healthy, Marshall is easily a top five talent. So why's he so low? He's the only real option the Dolphins have in their wideout corps.
The Matchup: Marshall has a tough one this week in the Minnesota Vikings. Even so, expect him to get 10-15 targets, and pull down a few good looking catches.
How He'll Do: 14 points.
43. Brandon Jackson, RB, Green Bay Packers
8 of 50
Why He's Here: With Ryan Grant out for the year, Jackson assumes the role of "The Man" in Green Bay's running game. However, he's not quite as talented as Grant is, and won't get to the same production levels.
The Matchup: Jackson couldn't have asked for a better debut opponent than the Buffalo Bills. They're defensive pushovers, and he should have a strong debut.
How He'll Do: 15 points. 85 yards rushing, 10 receiving, and a touchdown.
42. Ronnie Brown, RB, Miami Dolphins
9 of 50
Why He's Here: The Dolphin's Wildcat vaults Brown from trouble to the top 50. It makes him a threat to have a rushing, receiving, and passing touchdown every single week.
The Matchup: It'll be a tough one, as the Dolphins square off against the formidable front seven of the Vikings. Still, they're not unbeatable, and Brown could have success in the red zone.
How He'll Do: 15 points. Thank a rushing touchdown for this, or it might even be two, because the rushing yards won't be great this week.
41. Visanthe Shiancoe, TE, Minnesota Vikings
10 of 50
Why He's Here: Shiancoe is still forgotten by most defenses in the NFL, evidenced by his big game against the Saints. He's got top five tight end talent.
The Matchup: The Dolphins aren't fantastic against opposing tight ends, and Shiancoe often gets left open in the flat, or down field. Expect another strong performance from him.
How He'll Do: 15 points. Could be more if Favre looks his way more than once in the end zone.
40. Legedu Naanee, WR, San Diego Chargers
11 of 50
Why He's Here: Naanee looked awfully good in the Chargers' season opener, pulling down five catches for 110 yards and a score. He showed why so many people had him as a big sleeper pick this season.
The Matchup: Jacksonville's secondary isn't very good at all, and Naanee looks like he could have quite the game.
How He'll Do: 15 points.
39. Wes Welker, WR, New England Patriots
12 of 50
Why He's Here: Defenses always seem to key on shutting down Randy Moss in the Pats' offense, and when they do, Welker goes off.
The Matchup: The Jets defense is good, but Welker is better than Antonio Cromartie. Plus, even when New England faces elite defenses, Welker seems to get his stats.
How He'll do: 16 points. He's going to have a good game on Sunday. 100 receiving yards and a score.
38. Clinton Portis, RB, Washington Redskins
13 of 50
Why He's Here: Portis showed in Week 1 that he's going to be the only ball carrier in Washington. That merits a ranking.
The Matchup: Houston is alright against the run, but Portis will probably end up having a pretty solid game against them.
How He'll Do: 16 points.
37. Calvin Johnson, WR, Detroit Lions
14 of 50
Why He's Here: Johnson is one of the most talented receivers in football. But he can't seem to get a quarterback capable of utilizing him to his fullest potential.
The Matchup: Philly's defense is a tad overrated, and Johnson should have a big day, if Shaun Hill can get him the ball.
How He'll Do: 16 points.
36. Anquan Boldin, WR, Baltimore Ravens
15 of 50
Why He's Here: The Ravens' new star wideout had himself quite a game in week 1, against an elite Jets defense. 110 receiving yards is nothing to sneeze at.
The Matchup: Cincy's defense is good, but so was New York's. What makes you think he can be stopped by the Bengals?
How He'll Do: 100 receiving yards and a touchdown for 16 points.
35. Arian Foster, RB, Houston Texans
16 of 50
Why He's Here: Foster went off against the Colts last week, putting up 231 rush yards and three touchdowns.
The Matchup: Washington shut down Dallas' rush offense last week, and could do it to Foster in week 2.
How He'll Do: We'll split the difference between last week and the possibility Foster gets nothing against the Redskins. 16 points.
34. Dallas Clark, TE, Indianapolis Colts
17 of 50
Why He's Here: Clark is one of Peyton Manning's favorite targets, and defenses always seem to leave him open in the flat.
The Matchup: The Giants linebackers can't hang with Dallas in this one. Expect Peyton to hit him early and often.
How He'll do: 110 receiving yards and a score for 17 points.
33. Jermichael Finley, TE, Green Bay Packers
18 of 50
Why He's Here: Finley's poised for a breakout season in 2010, and could well break into the top four tight ends in football.
The Matchup: Last week, Philly made a concerted effort to lock Finley down. The Bills don't have that kind of talent.
How He'll Do: 17 points.
32. Matt Ryan, QB, Atlanta Falcons
19 of 50
Why He's Here: Ryan's not a top 50 guy every week. But with the Falcons' matchup, it should be a big day for him.
The Matchup: Arizona's secondary can't stop anything, which means Ryan will have a field day picking them apart.
How He'll Do: 17 points. Throw for a ton of yards and a couple scores.
31. Santana Moss, WR, Washington Redskins
20 of 50
Why He's Here: Moss is the best wideout in Washington, and should get plenty of chances to make plays in this week's clash.
The Matchup: Houston let Peyton Manning break the 400 yard mark. Needless to say, big things in story for Moss.
How He'll Do: 17 points on 110 yards and a score.
30. Michael Turner, RB, Atlanta Falcons
21 of 50
Why He's Here: Turner would be higher, but he failed to impress last week against Pittsburgh.
The Matchup: Much more favorable, as the Cardinals can't stop anyone.
How He'll Do: 17 points. 110 yards and a score.
29. Larry Fitzgerald, WR, Arizona Cardinals
22 of 50
Why He's Here: Fitz is a top three talent at wideout, but he's trapped with a lackluster quarterback.
The Matchup: Atlanta has no one in their secondary who can hang with Larry.
How He'll Do: 18 points, off 60 yards, and a pair of touchdowns.
28. Shonn Greene, RB, New York Jets
23 of 50
Why He's Here: Greene had a terrible week 1, but I fee like that was an aberration. He's still the number one runner in a rush-heavy offense.
The Matchup: New England shut down the Bengals' Cedric Benson in Week 1, but Greene's a more dynamic runner than he is.
How He'll Do: 18 points, off two touchdowns.
27. Darren McFadden, RB, Oakland Raiders
24 of 50
Why He's Here: McFadden looked excellent against Tennessee last week, and the Rams can't stop anything.
The Matchup: Like I said, the Rams defense is terrible. I think McFadden's been licking his chops since last week.
How He'll Do: 18 points. Between the rushing, receiving, and a touchdown, McFadden will be a huge fantasy boon this week.
26. Jamaal Charles, RB, Kansas City Chiefs
25 of 50
Why He's Here: Despite the presence of Thomas Jones, Charles looked sharp against San Diego, and gets quite the favorable matchup in Week 2.
The Matchup: The Browns. I don't think anything else needs to be said.
How He'll Do: 18 points off a touchdown and a big day running and receiving.
25. Miles Austin, WR, Dallas Cowboys
26 of 50
Why He's Here: Austin proved me wrong with an admirable Week 1 performance. Can he do it two weeks in a row?
The Matchup: The Bears defense is a bit overrated, and they'll have trouble stopping Miles from getting his yards.
How He'll Do: 18 points.
24. Marques Colston, WR, New Orleans Saints
27 of 50
Why He's Here: Colston showed his skills against the Vikings in the season opener, and looks poised for a big game.
The Matchup: San Francisco couldn't stop anybody against Seattle. Think New Orleans will make it any easier?
How He'll Do: 18 points, 60 yards, two scores.
23. Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Pittsburgh Steelers
28 of 50
Why He's Here: Were it not for the 51-yard game winning touchdown run, Mendenhall would have had a pedestrian day. But he's got the talent to be a star.
The Matchup: Tennessee gave up 135 rush yards to Oakland in week 1. Pittsburgh will stuff the ball down the Titans' throat even more.
How He'll Do: 18 points. 120 rush yards and a score.
22. Antonio Gates, TE, San Diego Chargers
29 of 50
Why He's Here: Arguably the best tight end in football, and the best receiver in San Diego right now. He's going to put up numbers every week.
The Matchup: Jacksonville. If Naanee can have a big game, so can Gates.
How He'll Do: 18 points. A pair of touchdowns are the icing on the cake.
21. Roddy White, WR, Atlanta Falcons
30 of 50
Why He's Here: Best wideout on a team who's going to be able to throw at will this week. Why do you think he's here?
The Matchup: The Cardinals struggled against the Rams offense last week. How do you think White will do?
How He'll Do: 18 points, 60 yards and a pair of scores.
20. DeAngelo Williams, RB, Carolina Panthers
31 of 50
Why He's Here: Because Carolina can't throw the ball well, and Tampa can't stop the run.
The Matchup: The Buccaneers are a year away from being a threat. Williams will get his yards.
How He'll Do: 100 rush yards, 20 receiving yards, and a score put him at 18 points.
19. Steve Smith, WR, Carolina Panthers
32 of 50
Why He's Here: Matt Moore has to throw sometime, and Smith is pretty much the only option for the Panthers at wideout.
The Matchup: See Williams, DeAngelo. Smith won't be stopped.
How He'll Do: 18 points, on 60 yards and two scores.
18. Pierre Thomas, RB, New Orleans Saints
33 of 50
Why He's Here: Thomas is the best back in New Orleans, and will get plenty of chances to break off a big run. He's not flashy, but he gets the job done.
The Matchup: The 49ers are a tough team, but something tells me they'll be more concerned with stopping the pass than the run.
How He'll Do: 90 rush yards, 30 receiving, and a score.
17. Greg Jennings, WR, Green Bay Packers
34 of 50
Why He's Here: He's the best wideout in a pass heavy system, with a great matchup this week.
The Matchup: Do you know who can keep up with Jennings in the Bills' secondary? Me either.
How He'll Do: 120 yards and a score will put Jennings at 18 points.
16. Kyle Orton, QB, Denver Broncos
35 of 50
Why He's Here: Orton had a heck of a day in Week 1, throwing for 295 yards and a touchdown.
The Matchup: The Seahawks like to blitz to keep quarterbacks off balance. Orton's got good poise though, and the blitz won't shake him, meaning Seattle's in trouble.
How He'll Do: 290 yards, two touchdowns. 18 points.
15. Philip Rivers, QB, San Diego Chargers
36 of 50
Why He's Here: Rivers threw for 298 yards and two touchdowns against Kansas City last week. Why can't he do it again?
The Matchup: Jacksonville can't seem to stop the pass, and their secondary is paper thin.
How He'll Do: Same as last week, but without the fumbles. 19 points.
14. Matt Schaub, QB, Houston Texans
37 of 50
Why He's Here: Last week aside, he's a top six quarterback. He'll have a big day against the Redskins.
The Matchup: Washington is alright against the pass, but Schaub has too many weapons not to have a big day this week.
How He'll Do: He'll finish with numbers similar to those put up by Rivers. 19 points.
13. Andre Johnson, WR, Houston Texans
38 of 50
Why He's Here: Do you really need to ask that question?
The Matchup: Washington did a good job against Dallas last week, but Johnson's in a completely different class than the Cowboys wideouts. Matt Schaub will be throwing plenty, and Johnson will be the primary recipient.
How He'll Do: Big day for Johnson. 130 yards and a score. 19 points.
12. Tony Romo, QB, Dallas Cowboys
39 of 50
Why He's Here: Romo looked good, not great, in the Cowboys' loss to the Redskins. But he'll be looking to make amends for last week's embarrassing play.
The Matchup: The Bears are good, but not as good as they were two or three years ago. He'll have himself a better game than you think.
How He'll Do: 19 points, between the arm and the legs.
11. Frank Gore, RB, San Francisco 49ers
40 of 50
Why He's Here: Gore was pretty much locked down last week in Seattle, but New Orleans isn't as good against the run.
The Matchup: The Saints struggle to contain talented backs at times, and Gore has the capacity to run over and through their front seven.
How He'll Do: 70-75 yards and two scores. Easy 19 points.
10. Ray Rice, RB, Baltimore Ravens
41 of 50
Why He's Here: Rice is a strong runner and an excellent receiver out of the backfield, and he's got big play potential.
The Matchup: Rice goes against a Bengals defense that allowed the ancient Fred Taylor to average five yards a carry. I think Ray is in line for a big game, don't you?
How He'll Do: 85 yards rushing, 45 yards receiving, and a score. 19 points in the bank.
9. Reggie Wayne, WR, Indianapolis Colts
42 of 50
Why He's Here: All those rumors about Wayne losing a step look silly now, after his 99 yard, one touchdown performance against the Texans.
The Matchup: Who's going to stop him from New York's secondary? That's what I thought.
How He'll Do: 75 yards and a couple of touchdowns give Wayne 19 points.
8. Brett Favre, QB, Minnesota Vikings
43 of 50
Why He's Here: New Orleans had his number in the season opener, but Favre will bounce back this week.
The Matchup: Miami can't contain Favre's receivers, and he could have quite the game against the Fins.
How He'll Do: Favre is the first of our 20 point performers on the day. 245 yards and three touchdowns puts him at 21 points.
7. Tom Brady, QB, New England Patriots
44 of 50
Why He's Here: Brady torched a good Bengals defense in the season opener, and he's hungry for more this week.
The Matchup: Is the Jets' defense talented? Sure they are. But Brady's looking to send a message, and something tells me he's going to send it loud and clear.
How He'll Do: How does 250 yards passing and three touchdowns sound to you? It sounds like 22 points to me.
6. Peyton Manning, QB, Indianapolis Colts
45 of 50
Why He's Here: Manning threw for 433 yards and three touchdowns against the Texans last week. That good enough for you?
The Matchup: Manning should have a field day against a lackluster Giants secondary. With all his weapons, he doesn't need to hand the ball off.
How He'll Do: 275 yards and three scores. Not quite as good as last week, but he won't have to be.
5. Steven Jackson, RB, St. Louis Rams
46 of 50
Why He's Here: He's one of the best running backs in the league, and has an excellent matchup, that's why.
The Matchup: Oakland couldn't stop Chris Johnson in Week 1, now they get to be run over by Jackson. If you think the Rams will chance throwing on the Raiders' secondary, you're dead wrong.
How He'll Do: 120 yards and two scores puts him in the clubhouse with 24 points.
4. Aaron Rodgers, QB, Green Bay Packers
47 of 50
Why He's Here: Rodgers had a decent day against the Eagles in the season opener, and should be in line for a big one in Week 2.
The Matchup: The Buffalo Bills can't stop Green Bay's multifaceted attack, and Rodgers will throw all game long.
How He'll Do: How does 300 yards and three scores sound to you? It sounds like 26 points to me.
3. Maurice Jones-Drew, RB, Jacksonville Jaguars
48 of 50
Why He's Here: Now that Jones-Drew has answered our questions about his knee, he can get back to dominating opposing defenses.
The Matchup: If San Diego couldn't stop Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones last week, what hope do they have against MJD?
How He'll Do: 120 yards rushing, 20 receiving and two scores. How's 26 points tickle your fancy?
2. Chris Johnson, RB, Tennessee Titans
49 of 50
Why He's Here: Johnson had himself a game last week, and while the Steelers' defense is good, Johnson is better.
The Matchup: Pittsburgh's defense may be back, but Johnson is arguably the best runner in the game. Even his off days put him this high.
How He'll Do: 140 yards and two scores. 26 points.
1. Adrian Peterson, RB, Minnesota Vikings
50 of 50
Why He's Here: He's fast, strong, and doesn't fumble anymore. There's no reason Peterson should be any lower than this.
The Matchup: So Miami shut down Buffalo's offense. So will everyone else. Let's see how they handle Peterson.
How He'll Do: 80 yards rushing 20 receiving and four total touchdowns. How's that for a big day?
