Randy Moss vs. Darrelle Revis: Who's the Slouch in Pats-Jets Showdown?

RM HeroldSep 15, 2010

After further review, Darrelle Revis is no fan of Randy Moss, which makes this week's game within a game that much more interesting.

In January of this year ESPN ran a story about Deion Sanders interviewing Darrelle Revis and playing word association with him.

It went like this:

"Deion Sanders: Two words or less, when I call out a name, tell me what you think.

Darrelle Revis: OK.

Sanders: T.O.

Revis: Slouch.

Sanders: Randy Moss.

Revis: Probably say slouch, too."

Recently Moss responded when the story was brought back up and he was speaking to Hannah Storm on Sportscenter. Moss said: "Words don't really hurt me... I guess he's entitled to say what he wants to say.  Then again, we're coming to the Meadowlands on Sunday, man.  So you got 60 minutes of this slouch. "

Let's get ready to rumble!

5. Moss Will Dominate Revis Because:

1 of 11

Randy is now fully motivated. And when that's the case, Moss is one of the three best receivers. Ever.

He has the contract stuff off of his chest and he spoke to Belichick. The this video was released showing that Moss was one of the more excited members of the team after the win.

Most people find it hard to believe but Moss is beloved by most of his teammates.

Listen for him at the :55 second mark.

5. Revis Will Strand Moss on Revis Island Because:

2 of 11

Revis knows that his team cannot start the season 0-2, especially if one of those losses is to a division foe. And the game is at home.

Is this a must-win for the Jets? As close to one as they want to have this early.

4. Moss Will Make Revis Look Silly Because:

Moss is five inches taller and fifteen pounds heavier than Revis. He was shut down in the first meeting to the tune of 4 catches for 24 yards against DR as New York won.

But in the second game, though the numbers weren't much better, Moss positioned himself and scored one of very few touchdowns against Revis last year.

More importantly the Pats got the win.

4. Darrelle Revis Will Bury Moss Like Sand Because:

Revis shut down more top line receivers last year than any other corner back in history.

Names like Steve Smith, Andre Johnson, Ochocinco twice, Moss twice, Owens twice, all were kept under their season averages.

Why should we expect anything less than what he's done in the past?

3. Moss Will Get Rescued From Revis Island Because:

FOXBORO, MA - SEPTEMBER 12: Quarterback Tom Brady #12 and Randy Moss #81 of the New England Patriots take a breather on the bench during the NFL season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals at Gillette Stadium on September 12, 2010 in Foxboro, Massachuset

Tom Brady. Tom terrific has an ego as well. And he hates the Jets. He has let it be known that if Hard Knocks was up for the Oscar he still wouldn't watch it.

You don't think he is going to try and set Randy up to succeed? Those two are BFF.

Watch how many times they go to Moss early.

3. Revis Will Keep Moss in Check Because:

Bill Belichick. He is about trying to win. And if Revis is covering Moss while Brandon Tate, the two young tight ends, Kevin Faulk and of course Wes Welker are killing everyone else, well damn it, that's where the ball is going to go.

And if they are up by enough points, then Bill might let Tom and Randy play some catch.

2. Moss Will Get His Way Over Revis Because:

Revis missed all of the preseason and he is not in game shape yet. Chasing a close to forty-year old Derrick Mason who was never fast is one thing.

Chasing Moss down-field all game is something totally different. He might keep Randy bottled up for most of the game, but there will be a go pattern at some point that Randy gets the better of him.

And that could be the game winner.

2. Revis Will Cover Moss Like Shade Because:

Rex Ryan. Ryan has as much of an ego as any player. You know it bugged him that his old team beat him.

And it bugs him that everybody kisses Bill Belichick's... rings.

He is going to make sure that Revis gets safety help when needed and linebacker help underneath.

There is no way he wants his guy looking bad on national TV.

1. Moss Will Rename Revis Island Because:

The Patriots will be playing with less stress and on the road, so they know if they get a lead on the Jets, they will then be able to try and take the air out of the ball and run down the clock.

They know the Jets don't have the offense to be a come back team yet. So the pressure will build on them, if they fall behind.

And if Revis comes up to help stop the run and Tom Brady runs a play action fake...

Cancel Christmas.

Revis Will Prove Moss Is a Slouch Because:

Revis is in shape even without having to go to preseason.

He is the best cover corner we have seen in a while.

Even if the Jets lose, Moss won't get crazy numbers.

Good pitching stops good hitting. Good defense stops good scoring.

Great corners stop great receivers.

The Verdict:

ORCHARD PARK, NY - DECEMBER 20: Randy Moss #81 and Sammy Morris #34 of the New England Patriots celebrate Moss's touchdown in the second quarter against the Buffalo Bills at Ralph Wilson Stadium on December 20, 2009 in Orchard Park, New York. (Photo by

Moss will catch 5 passes for 75 yards and a touchdown. Welker will catch 10 passes for 120 yards and a touchdown.

The rest of the Patriots will catch enough balls to make everyone forget the Revis-Moss matchup.

Revis wins the battle, keeping Moss under monster numbers.

The Patriots win the game, 27-17.
