NFL Power Rankings: Team Standings, Results Going Into Week 2

OK, forgive me for not taking the Super Bowl champs as the No. 1 team on the power rankings last week. While I had the Colts as the top team, I knew they would be challenged by the Texans and could lose.

Let’s give it a refresh and start with the Saints on top for Week 2.

Week Two Power Rankings

1. Saints: The Saints are the champs and until they lose this will be the spot they stay at on my power rankings. That loss could come this week in San Francisco as the 49ers will look to atone for not showing up against the Seahawks.

2. Patriots: They don’t have a great secondary at this time, but the Patriots should win at least 12 games. Tom Brady looks terrific, and Wes Welker is amazingly playing at pre-injury level.

The Jets did all the talking, but the Patriots are doing the walking so far.

3. Packers: Even though the Packers lost Ryan Grant for the season, they still look strong. Unless the Vikings can get a legit top receiver (Vincent Jackson) via trade, I expect the Packers to win the NFC North.

4. Ravens: It may be a bit premature to rank the Ravens this high until they beat the Bengals this coming week. Still, Baltimore’s secondary was much stronger than many would have thought against the Jets and their offense will be better as time goes on.

5. Texans: It’s time to give the Texans some love as they finally beat the Colts and have a very good running back. Sure, Arian Foster has only started a couple of games in his career, but his performance so far leads me to believe he will be productive all year.

The Texans defense still needs work in the secondary, but they can make plays and that is what this team needs most.

6. Colts: It will be interesting to see if the Colts will fall into an early season funk. This weekend, Peyton Manning plays his brother Eli on Sunday Night Football. We should all get a good look at the Colts’ issues on the front line as the Giants sport a solid pass rush.

7. Vikings: Brett Favre will probably need a couple more weeks before he has his arm back. It took Favre about three weeks into the season last year before he caught on fire, but this week he does face a weak secondary in the Dolphins. Let’s see if the Vikings can score over 30 points in this one.

8. Cowboys: Good teams tend to start the season slow, and the Cowboys did against the Redskins. This doesn’t mean they won’t come back and win their division, but they need to beat the Bears in Week 2.

Dez Bryant should continue to push Roy Williams for the starting job as he out-performed the veteran Week 1.

9. Jets: Shonn Greene had a horrible game against the Ravens, and the Jets need him to rebound. This week they play the Patriots, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the Jets are winless after this week.

Still, this team is tough and should rebound against the Dolphins and Bills in Weeks 3 and 4.

10. Titans: Maybe the Titans are ready for a playoff berth after all. This group looked strong against the Raiders, but that’s not saying much. This week, they face stiffer competition when they play the Steelers.
