This Game Was Truly, Painful- But There Is a Silver Lining

Michael McCormickSep 13, 2010

This game was far more painful to me than last year's loss. After all, Notre Dame did win the game, the referees just decided to give the victory to Michigan. This year, it was a vague injury to D. Crist which cost Notre Dame the victory. Yes there was some questionable choices by Coach Kelly. Yes, the defense did give up some big plays. Yet, Notre Dame was in a position to win it at the end, and they could not make the plays to get the job done.

I usually like to get through the painful part first. The defense was not consistent in the game. At times, they did manage to control the quarterback, but again the quarterback was able to get far to many plays. The offensive line for Notre Dame did not help matters at all. When they were called on to make plays, they folded again and again. T. Jones's touchdown did provide a spark, but also showed he lacks discipline. That took quick near fumble at the goal line is not acceptable at Notre Dame. Schools like USC tolerate that behavior. I do trust that Coach Kelly will correct that immediately.

I really do not mind the way Coach Kelly ran the game. Yes, it was a big gamble to go for a touchdown instead of the field goal. But remember, Notre Dame was down two touchdowns. The Notre Dame defense was not showing that they could consistently keep Michigan from scoring. At that time being down by 11 points instead of 14 points really did not seem to be such a big difference. We also need to remember that Coach Kelly has consistently spoken out on building a relationship with his players. The demonstration of trust in them which he showed is important.

Now here is the silver lining. Both the offense and defense did show they were capable of making great plays. Notre Dame does have two legitimate All-Americans on their team. D. Crist has some the makings of being a truly outstanding quarterback. There is a lack of consistency which is irritating, but the new coach should get that on track. Notre Dame does have the people to go to East Lansing and truly dominate Michigan State. However, this is the type of loss which really could send a team in a spiral. We shall learn on 09/18/10 what type of team Notre Dame has. Coach Kelly did declare that this team does not have a "breacking point". I hope he proves that next Saturday.
