The 49ers have improved each of the first two years head coach Mike Singletary has been calling the shots, but NFL bettors and Niners fans think the 2010-11 season will be the one that finds the franchise back in the post-season for the first time in many moons.

The Chicago Bears former middle linebacker led the team to a 7-9 SU and 7-8-1 ATS mark after taking over midway through the 2008-09 season. After bolting out to a 3-1 SU & 4-0 ATS tally last season, San Francisco only went on to win five of its next 12 games while posting a 6-4-2 mark against the latest NFL odds.

Now in the second full year of the Singletary regime, the pieces certainly look to be in place for them to win the NFC West for the first time since 2002.

With Alex Smith now deemed his starting field general, it brings a sense of calm over the offense knowing exactly who owns the QB1 slot. Aiding Smith in the backfield will be RB Frank Gore whose power running was sorely missed a year ago, as well as free agent acquisition Brian Westbrook who the front office hopes still has some tread left on his tires.

With WR’s Michael Crabtree, Josh Morgan, Ted Ginn Jr., and TE Vernon Davis to throw to, the Niners should obliterate their 20.6 PPG average a season ago.

Complementing the offense will be one of the nastiest defensive units in the league that flat out gets to opposing QBs – Singletary’s bunch churned out 44 sacks good for the third best mark in the league a year ago.
The Jim Mora Jr. experiment didn’t go over too well.

Actually, it went so bad that Seattle brass nipped it in the bud after just one season. In doing so, it opened up a slot for Pete Carroll to jump into after he decided to bolt USC knowing full well a whole boatload of sanctions were about to get thrown down on the Trojans football program – this will be his third go round in the NFL after coaching the Jets in 1994 and Patriots from 1997-99.

He inherits a club that’s won a combined nine games the L/2 seasons.

Seattle couldn’t stop anyone from scoring a year ago (#25 at 24.4 PPG) and couldn’t score themselves averaging just 17.5 PPG (#21).

NFL Insider Tip: These teams have alternated wins and losses each of the L/4 meetings. Both teams held serve at home a year ago with the Niners scoring the 23-10 Week 2 home win and cover as one-point favorites, while the Seahawks protected their house in Week 11 winning 20-17 as one-point underdogs.

While the Niners are just 1-2 ATS as a road favorite the L/2 seasons, I really like them on the latest NFL odds in this early season battle with their division rival. With the Seahawks in transition, the Niners enter on much more solid ground and there’s no reason they shouldn’t win this one handily.

They’re expected to win the division for the first time in eight seasons, and in order to live up to the expectations, games like this have to be automatic W’s. Look for San Francisco to weather the storm early and pull away in the second half for the road win and cover.
