What Happened to Virginia Tech? NCAA Week 2 Day Games Report

Alex FergusonSep 11, 2010

While we watch Penn State get their butts handed to them by Alabama (17-0 towards the end of the second half) in Tuscaloosa, we think it's important to reflect on the midday and afternoon games in college football.

Stunning upsets

1) James Madison beats No. 13 Virginia Tech 21-16 - In Lane Stadium. We're always searching for a repeat of Appalachian State at Michigan in 2005, and we might have just found one with this jaw-dropping result in a place where Championship Subdivision sides go to die. Well, JMU didn't. What a game. We'll try to explain this on Monday.

2) Kansas beats Georgia Tech 28-25 KU, who we predicted would end up a solid bottom of the Big XII North this year after losing just about everything good about the program last year, pulled off a stunner against the tricksters from the bad end of Atlanta.

Big Game Winners

1) Ohio State. The bad thing is that the Buckeyes will get hurt repeatedly from a special teams standpoint. The good things? Terrelle Pryor put on a Heisman show against Miami, and the defense is looking pretty darned strong. Oh, and the schedule's looking sweet (apart from the potential breathtaker in Iowa) after dealing with Miami 36-24 at the Horseshoe in a game that was far more one-sided than the scoreline suggests.

2) South Carolina. Marcus Lattimore killed Georgia in the midday showdown in Columbia, smoking the Dawgs for 182 yards and two touchdowns in a tremendous display.

3) Michigan Michigan fans are suddenly feeling indomitable after winning their (permanent) second biggest game of the year against Notre Dame 28-24, with quarterback Denard Robinson running the ball in with 27 seconds to go. Brian Kelly was looking really rather upset. Irish haters were overjoyed. Michigan haters wept.

4) Oklahoma. We thought the FSU-Oklahoma was going to be close. It wasn't. The Sooners are looking by far and away the best team in the Big XII right now, and could well run the table (we predict a victory over Texas, who, at the time of writing, are struggling against Wyoming at the time of writing).

And some other points:

1) Horrific day for the ACC. Tech, FSU, Miami, and VT all beaten. Suddenly, Boise State's top three ranking looks horrible...

2)...Which is strange, because no one in the SEC looks that good, either (apart from Alabama). Florida were woeful for most of their game against South Florida, Georgia and South Carolina didn't make anyone excited, Tennessee aren't great, LSU are poor. The list goes on and on.

3) Miami wins the "Best Cheerleaders of the Early Games" Award, followed by Georgia and Ohio State. The rain at Neyland Stadium has gotten in the way of us having the first look of the season at the Oregon cheerleaders....
