Had former coach Derek Dooley still been in charge of the Bulldogs program, I would entertain the thought of backing the Bulldogs plus the generous amount of points in this spot. They did cover LSU as 22-point road underdogs last season, but they look to be running into an entirely different animal that by no means will be overlooking them.
The Aggies were a nice story a year ago going 6-6 in the regular season to go bowling after a year hiatus. Though they got walloped by the Georgia Bulldogs in the Independence Bowl, the team entered the 2010 season with very high hopes.
Any why not, they’re in the third season of the Mike Sherman regime and return 16 overall starters from last year’s squad – seven on offense and nine on defense.
QB Jerrod Johnson had a breakout campaign last season, and even more is expected of the field general in his senior season. His dual threat abilities landed him on the 2nd Team Big 12 last season, and he got off to a roaring start to his 2010 campaign.
Last week against Stephen F. Austin, Johnson threw for 278 yards and a pair of TDs with no picks. Though he was bottled up on the ground (9 rushes for 6 yards and a TD), his teammates did their parts to pick up the slack.
Though it took them almost a full quarter to snag the game’s first score, the scoreboard was constantly hit up the rest of the game and the Aggies went on to cover the 33-point spread en route to the 48-7 college football odds predictions victory.
The Aggies chewed up 236 yards of offense on 60 overall rushes with RB Christine Michael leading the way with 105 yards and a pair of TDs on 22 carries.
Most impressive was the performance of the new look defense that switched to the 3-4 this past off-season. It limited the Lumberjacks to just 266 total yards with just 31 coming on the ground. New defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter looks to be well on his way towards improving the 33.5 PPG allowed just a short season ago.
NCAA Football Insider Tip: With the Bulldogs getting tested mightily from a heavily dogged Grambling State squad last week, I really don’t see them hanging around in this one let alone being competitive.
The offense mustered only 336 overall yards in the game and converted on just 4-of-13 third down tries. In order to hang within this pointspread, LA Tech is going to need to win the turnover and time of possession battles. Considering they only won the TO battle 2:1 and lost the TOP battle by nearly five minutes last week, the outlook doesn’t look bright for them to achieve those goals this evening.
On top of that, Kyle Field used to be one of the toughest venues to go into and come out victorious. The 12th man will be out in full effect, and the fact that LA Tech is 0-5 ATS the L/5 times it faced a B12 opponent and 0-6 its L/6 true road openers losing by an average of 35 PPG, the prognosis looks bleak at best for a competitive game in this spot.
