The Virginia Cavaliers had become the laughing-stock of the ACC the L/2 seasons, and because of it, the University decided to make a change in the coaching department. Out with Al Groh and his 59-53 record the L/9 years and in with some new blood in Mike London.

The former Cavaliers defensive coordinator coached at the University of Richmond before coming over and most recently won an FCS Title back in 2008.

Truly poetic, his first gig as Cavaliers head coach came against his former team last Saturday. He immediately made his mark on the program coaching his kids to victory in a season opener for the first time in five seasons.

And they looked good in doing so churning out a balanced attack offensively with 205 yards on the ground and 283 through the air, while limiting the Spiders to just 333 overall yards.

QB Marc Verica completed 69 percent of his 35 passes for 183 yards and a TD, but it was the play of bruising RB Keith Payne that had the Cavaliers sidelines erupting with excitement the entire game. The 255 lb back carried the ball just 16 times for 114 yards, but he scored four TDs while dragging numerous defenders on his back throughout the game.

While the Cavaliers thoroughly enjoyed their first win of the season, the same can’t be said of the Trojans who came away very upset with the way they performed in their 49-36 road victory over Hawaii.

Offensively, USC looked great as it racked up 524 yards of total offense with 278 coming through the air. QB Matt Barkley threw for five TD passes without a pick, with WR Ronald Johnson being the beneficiary of seven of those passes with three going for TDs.

The problems lied on the other side of the ball however with the stop unit giving up a whopping 588 yards with 459 of them coming via the pass. Even though they knocked starting QB Bryant Moniz out of the game, the Trojans “D” was still unable to limit his backups. Because of it, Trojans bettors suffered the college football betting defeat.

They lost the time of possession and turnover battles, and also got flagged an obscene 11 times which equated to 100 penalty yards.

NCAA Football Insider Tip : As good a story as UVA was last week, I really don’t foresee them having any shot of picking up the outright win in Tinseltown. That said; I also don’t envision USC coming out and immediately correcting the multitude of problems they exhibited last Thursday night.

Look for the offense to once again reign supreme, but the “D” will have problems containing UVA offensive coordinator Bill Lazor’s balanced attack.

The ‘over’ has cashed in each of Virginia’s L/7 non-conference games, and its 2-0 ATS the L/2 times it was tagged road underdogs in the 14.5 to 21 point range.

Look for their never say die mentality under the new coaching staff to force Kiffin’s kids to continue piling on points, ultimately pushing the combined score in this one ‘over’ the closing college football betting number.
