Goodbye To The Funniest Bench Of The Nba
Last season most commentators and critics blasted the Lakers bench as the weak spot of the team.
Often the starting five would build a double digit lead, only for the second unit to blow it.
However, i know many Laker fans had a special love for that bench, and when you have a guy called Kobe Bryant on your team, you can afford for your second unit to make mistakes.
There was just something about the bench that made Laker fans (including myself) smile when you thought about their on-court moments,.
We had Sasha Vujacic, Dj Mbenga, Luke Walton and Adam Morrision. That’s like having the equivalent of 3 Brian Scalabrines in your team. Tough luck Celtics, we have the better lucky charms.
Sasha Vujacic, had his break-out year, conveniently in his contract year and is now over-paid on the bench. Thanks to the infamous and hilarious machine videos, his on-court moments are exaggerated and placed in YouTube videos.
DJ Mbenga, has the craziest story ever. He escaped execution in his home country and moved to Belgium. BEIGIUM??? I never knew the country was famous for its basketball. How he got into the nba was probably a strange road. Add to the fact that no-one can understand a word he says, adds to the humour.
Luke Walton, the "intelligent" player, has the know-how, but the no-skills to back it up. With his curly locks and poor back for the past 2 years he’s a recurring joke for Laker fans. Notice how the Lakers won two titles without Luke playing healthy, huh, less court-time, more championships. Anyways the man behind the machine videos, made one of Walton, which is too funny.
Why is he posting Ginobili? Gotta love his heart.
Adam Morrision.....just too easy, the loveable guy with a moustache. During the playoffs took the role of Bench Legend Ronni Turaif and became the cheerleader of the team.
Now what alarms me is that we've lost half of these guys. DJ Mbenga is away to the Nuggets, damn Denver clearly trying to convince Carmelo to stay with such an awesome guy. Rumours circulate that he was the x-factor behind the Lakers championship run. Well rumours, as in, the one I just created now. Come on!! DJ arrives for 2 years = 2 championships. Let’s just say if the Lakers lose this year, I’m pushing this thing through.
Adam Morrison, free agent, and if any team has any sense, they’ll snap this gem up.
Luke Walton, a further back injury has caused another set-back, so we won’t see his post-game that he’s been developing for the past 2 years.
Sasha Vujacic's name has been brought up in trade rumours and it doesn’t appear likely that a new contract will be given to him at the end of the year.
UNLESS he brings some of his Slovenian magic and scores 20 points in the playoff finals again. However I’m not sure if that same trick will fool Jerry Buss twice in a row.
Now we've got a serious bench, I doubt Matt Barnes and Steve Blake, bring the comedy desperately needed. Worse still Lamar Odom might become bored without his usual crew and actually want to start.
Now ill have to search for a new funny bench in the nba. I’m hoping the Nuggets see sense and sign Scalabrine. Him and DJ would be a dynamic duo....but it simply wont be the same as the dreamy Lakers bench of 09-10. R.I.P., always loved and never forgotten..
Bring back Pat Burke anyone??
