Pittsburgh Steelers (+2) over Atlanta Falcons: The Steelers loss is our gain. Ben Roethlisberger is suspended, and as a result we can buy low here, getting Pittsburgh as a home underdog. The Steelers will stress the run, which takes some of the sting out of Dennis Dixon starting at quarterback. Then again, Dixon did look good in two of his three preseason games and his running ability is an asset. The key to this contest is that the Pittsburgh defense should come to play.

Green Bay Packers (-3) over Philadelphia Eagles: No team looked better in preseason than the Packers, and Aaron Rodgers is all set up to have an MVP season. As long as the outstanding Green Bay offensive line can keep the very good Philadelphia pass rush at bay, then Rodgers and his receivers should have a field day vs. a suspect Eagles defensive backfield. On the flip side, Kevin Kolb will not feel too comfortable behind a shaky Philly offensive line, as he should be under constant pressure.

Arizona Cardinals (-4) over St. Louis Rams: The Rams are heading in the right direction and they should top their 2009 win total of, um, let’s count together, one…one…OK one! Meanwhile, the Cardinals figure to slip a bit after winning the last two NFC West titles. That said; this is opening week, and at this time we favor a more experienced Arizona club that feels they have something to prove with so many experts writing them off over a young Rams team that will be better later in the season than right now.

San Francisco 49ers (-3) over Seattle Seahawks: Mike Singletary should garner some Coach of the Year votes by season’s end, as this young, physical 49ers team seems primed to win the NFC West Division. It should all start with an easy win this week. The Seahawks have issues with not one, but both lines, and San Francisco should take full advantage. On offense, look for a fresh Frank Gore, who hardly played in preseason, to run through some gaping holes. On defense, look for the aggressive Niners’ front seven to spend a lot of time in Seattle’s backfield.

San Diego Chargers (-4.5) over Kansas City Chiefs: Some experts say that the Chiefs are improved this season, and this cheap NFL spread implies just that. Don’t believe the hype though, as the Chargers are still far and away the best team in the AFC West. Remember that San Diego was very sloppy on opening night last season, allowing the Oakland Raiders to get the backdoor cover. Look for a more dominating Week 1 performance this time around!
