Tom Brady Car Accident: Will Multiple Distractions Impact Brady in Week 1?

Erik FrenzSep 9, 2010

As long as Tom Brady's name is attached to the headline, anyone and everyone will talk about it and read about it.

Brady's car accident at 6:34 AM as reported by WEEI and NECN has generated such a swirl that it is currently the No. 1 search on Google.

We have since learned that he was not hospitalized, and that he fully participated in the team's walk-through at 11:15 AM, and later fully participated in the team's afternoon practice, with photographic evidence from the Boston Herald.

There's currently no report from camp regarding how sharp Brady looked. He said he was "OK", but according to USA Today a city official said that he was "a little shaken up" after the accident.

Duh.

When you go through a green light while a minivan flies at you through a red light, of course you'll be shaken. The accident, nor any lingering physical affects from it, don't concern me.

What worries me is that Brady, who has made such a strong and positive habit of keeping his football life distraction-free by simply focusing on the task at hand, has seen his stance take on a strong barrage of one big thing after another.

First, it was the reported $58 million, three-year extension on the table as of Monday; an extension that three days later remains unsigned. Now, a scary car accident leaves Brady's black Audi in pieces.

Could it be that Brady has had too much distracting him this week to keep his eyes on football and the Week 1 game against the Bengals?

You can stop with that line of thinking right this second.

Remember in 2007, when the SpyGate story broke just after Week 1 against the Jets? Many thought that the distraction would be too much for the Patriots to handle going up against a tough opponent in the San Diego Chargers.

But Tom Brady and the Patriots didn't miss a beat, putting up the same scores both on offense and defense in Week 2 as they did on opening day.

I wonder if Tom Brady will be such a hot search topic over something that matters. Perhaps a win on Sunday will help prove or disprove that theory.
