Over/Under: 10 of the Most Overrated/Underrated Dallas Cowboys
Never in my lifetime have I ever associated the word “underrated” with the Dallas Cowboys. The team’s owner, Jerry Jones, epitomizes shrewd and excessiveness. Jones recently built a stadium worth more than many countries Gross Domestic Product with the cost going north of $1 billion dollars.
The Dallas Cowboys have five Super Bowl rings, many a number of hall of famers, one of the most recognizable brands in the world, can hold claim to having the guy who owns the record for most rushing yards in a career, and they are “America’s team.” If anything about the Cowboys screams underrated Jerry Jones is sure to bring attention to so that everyone and their families knows about it
But believe it or not, there are a few underrated players that play football for America’s team. These guys have flown under the radar for awhile but have been huge contributors to the Cowboys recent run of success. Yet with the underrated there also comes the overrated.
The Cowboys have had their fair share of overrated players throughout the years, hello Quincy Carter, and they have a few on the team now.
Welcome to the house of ratings where one may find their favorite Cowboys player.
Here is my list of the 5 most underrated and 5 most overrated Cowboys players, patent pending.
Uderrated: 1.Kevin Ogletree
1 of 10
Kevin is from the world famous Queens, New York; so he most definitely does not lack toughness. But the second year man out of Virginia is an emerging star for the Cowboys. Head coach Wade Phillips and owner Jerry Jones had enough faith in him to trade disgruntled wide receiver Patrick Crayton away to get Ogletree more touches. Expect a huge improvement from his 96-receiving yard season in 2009 this year.
2. Anthony Spencer
2 of 10
If we were to look up the word breakout in the dictionary, my man Anthony Spencer’s picture should be next to it. He has all the tools to become one scary pass rusher standing at 6'3" and 240 pounds. He’s coupled with one of the game’s best in DeMarcus Ware and he had six sacks last season, all coming after the team’s bye week. Look for Spencer to make a huge splash this season with double digit sacks.
3. Matt McBriar
3 of 10
I know, I know; placing a punter in any type of ranking’s list besides special teams is always suspect. But believe me, Matt McBriar is one of the game’s best. Last year he ranked 10th in net average and his longest punt was for 63 yards. Thirty-eight of his foot bombs were for touchbacks and he averaged 45 yards per kick. McBriar is a serious help to the Cowboys defense, routinely giving the opposing offense terrible field position.
4. Keith Brooking
4 of 10
For the many videos that we saw of Brooking firing the ‘Boys up for a big game last season one would think that he would have received more recognition. Brooking is the attitude of the Cowboys defense. Ware gets the numbers but Brooking brings the noise. Without his leadership and his motor that never changes gears, the Cowboys defense would lack some serious bite.
5. Mike Jenkins
5 of 10
Mike is another player who is due for another “breakout” season. At times last years he was the best Cowboys cornerback on the field. Playing opposite of Terrance Newman has allowed him to flourish and last season he snagged an impressive five interceptions. Jenkins should build on that foundation and become one the league’s best cornerbacks.
1.Overrated: Roy Williams
6 of 10
Last season Roy Williams caught 38 balls for 596 yards. The lone bright spot for the former Texas Longhorn was his seven touchdowns. Oh yeah, he averaged almost 16 yards per catch. Williams has been nothing short of a disappointment since arriving in Dallas and many fans expect his production to decline with the arrival of rookie Dez Bryant. We’re still waiting Roy, we’re still waiting.
2.Marcus Spears
7 of 10
Marcus Spears was drafted in the same class as DeMarcus Ware, so many people expected huge numbers out of the former LSU Bengal Tiger. Spears was a big defensive end that would bring pressure off the edge and become a stalwart on the line. We are still waiting for that breakout season. So far Spears’ best season has been a 45 tackle, one sack campaign back in 2006. Ever since his production has been erratic at best. This may be his last season in Cowboy town, so he better make this his best.
3. Jason Witten
8 of 10
Before I’m assailed with “you’re stupid” or “you’re an idiot” for placing Jason Witten on this list, hear me out. He is one of the best tight ends in the league and one can make an argument that he’s the best all-around tight end period.
Witten routinely catches 90 plus balls and is Tony Romo’s No. 1 option. He’s the team’s offensive safety valve and is as dependable as any player in the league. But Witten caught two touchdowns last season. For my fantasy football heads, Witten is great for yards but terrible for touchdown catches. The only reason he appears on this list is because of his paltry number of touchdown catches last year and I would fully expect for Witten to up that number this season.
4. Dez Bryant
9 of 10
Sorry Cowboys fans, the jury is out on Dez until we actually get game film on him. He’s fast, explosive, quick, and has a mean set of hands. But the talk of Bryant being the gun powder in offensive coordinator Jason Garrett’s gun is just crazy. He’ll be the third option to start and until he gets the offense down and understands the complexities of NFL defenses, he’ll remain on the list of overrated players.
5. Jerry Jones
10 of 10
Jerry Jones is responsible for three hall of fame players, three Super Bowl rings, a gorgeous new stadium, and he turned the Cowboys into the most profitable franchise in the National Football League. But—he has his faults. There was the firing of Jimmy Johnson, the hiring of Dave Campo, his decision to pass on Randy Moss in the draft, and a number of additional head scratching decisions.
He’s this era’s Al Davis and some of his players call him coach even though he’s never coached an NFL game a day in his life. Jones is bar none one of the best, if not the best, owners in the National Football League. It’s just… sometimes Jerry makes you wonder with some of the decisions that he makes. Ryan Leaf anyone?
