San Diego enters its 2010-11 campaign after finishing last year winning 13 of 17 SU & splitting their 16 games ATS (8-8). The Chargers drafted RB Ryan Mathews to help Darren Sproles pace the ground game that ranked a shoddy 31st in the league last season. Unfortunately for QB Phillip Rivers, his favorite target, Vincent Jackson, is still holding out. Shawne Merriman returns to anchor the defense that surrendered 20 PPG a year ago.
The Chiefs drafted ball hawking S Eric Berry from Tennessee to bolster their secondary, and also drafted special teams specialist Dexter McCluster. Starting QB Matt Cassel returns from injury to take the reins of a passing attack that ranked 25th in the league last season. WR’s Chris Chambers and Dwayne Bowe are Cassel’s two best target options on an otherwise mediocre WR corps. Thomas Jones was brought in to improve an already decent 11th ranked rushing attack from last season - He and RB Jamaal Charles should prove to be a nasty 1-2 punch.
Against the spread, neither of these teams boast solid winning trends. In the L/2 years San Diego is 17-9 SU, but a bankroll depleting 10-15 ATS when favored. Against AFC West opposition, they’ve won 10 of their L/12 SU while posting a 7-5 ATS record. Kansas City is a sickening 6-23 SU but a respectable 15-14 ATS when it went off the board as the decided underdog the L/29 times. They’ve failed to protect their house as well going 2-14 SU & 5-11 ATS the L/2 seasons. KC has averaged 13.5 PPG the L/4 times it hosted the Chargers.
