Washington Redskins Finalize 2010 Practice Squad

Shae CroninSep 6, 2010

For those of you who think being released by a team and assigned to the practice squad is tough luck, think again. While it may not be as much fun as suiting up on gameday and playing for the real thing, practice squad players are set to make $5,200 every week for 17 weeks—giving them a salary of $88,400 for working about 33% of the year. Not bad.

And with that, the Washington Redskins have finalized their 2010 practice squad roster, with a majority of the guys being familiar faces.

Terrance Austin (WR) – A seventh-round pick from UCLA in the 2010 NFL Draft, Austin led the offense this preseason with 10 receptions for 146 yards and a touchdown.

Ryan Torain (RB) – After playing for Shanahan in 2008 with the Denver Broncos, Torain joined the Redskins and rushed for 94 yards on 28 carries during the preseason.

Selvish Capers (OL) – A 2010 NFL Draft selection of the seventh-round, Capers played right tackle for West Virginia in college. He attempted to make the switch to left tackle after joining the Redskins and even played some guard. The coaches seem to like this kid.

Will Robinson (OT) – After being promoted from the team’s practice squad last season in December, Robinson was fighting for a backup left tackle job this preseason.

Erik Cook (C) – Also a seventh-round pick in last April’s draft, Cook played both the guard and center positions.

Anderson Russell (S) – Played a great preseason at safety and on special teams, the undrafted free agent from Ohio State couldn’t find room on the final-53 with so many other options at the position.

Rob Jackson (LB) – A seventh-round selection in the team’s 2008 draft, Jackson has spent time on the practice squad before. He has also played in five NFL games for the Redskins.

Mike Balogun (LB) – Dismissed from his Oklahoma Sooners team for the suspicion of playing semi-pro football, the 26-year-old Upper Marlboro native was signed-on for the final spot on the squad. Balogun played the preseason with the San Francisco 49er’s before being released.
