Big Performance Saturday Night; Can Newton Bring Home The Heisman!

Matt ZadenSep 6, 2010

Cam Newton’s debut was one for the ages. Why not just go ahead and give him the Heisman, he’s going to win it anyways.

The last time Auburn had a Heisman winner it was 1985. Auburn has had many great players since that but none better than our very own Bo Jackson. Before that it was Pat Sullivan and he had won the trophy in 1971. Those two players are the only players to win the Heisman in our storied history. Can Newton be in the same class as these two historic players? After Saturday night? No doubt.

Did Vince Young come back to play or was that Auburn with a great quarterback? Last night Newton looked like a veteran quarterback, sitting in the pocket, rolling out, looking down field, and scrabbling like Young. All the hype that surrounded Cam this off season was worth every second. In Newton’s first game he broke the single game rushing record for a quarterback. He also threw for three touchdowns and ran for two. Just think what he will be like when he settles in. We might score 50 points a game from here on out, even against Bama.

Now back to Heisman talk. Last night watching the college football news, I noticed that they didn’t even talk about Newton’s performance. Maybe their not aware that Auburn hasn’t had a Heisman trophy winner in 25 years. Maybe this year they will give it to the best player in college football instead of what would be politically correct! Last seasons Heisman trophy was just given to the player, because his football team had never won a Heisman. How convenient was that?

With the performance that Newton had Saturday night I think he should now be in the Heisman race. If Ryan Mallet can already be in the Heisman talk, why cant Newton? If he scrambles and throws the rock like he did Saturday night, he will be in all the conversations after the big prime time game Thursday. How could he not be? If he performs every game like he did Saturday night, he will when the Heisman.
