Washington Redskins: Cuts Come and Go But The Final 53 Remain

Shae CroninSep 4, 2010

Although it wasn’t easy, the Washington Redskins released 22 players today in order to get down to their final 53-man roster.

As we predicted, some were surprises and some were obvious. Compared to our predictions, here’s a list of who was cut on Saturday:

Tight Ends: Lee Vickers – Not surprised with the release. More surprised that Paulsen stays with the team.

Quarterbacks: Richard Bartel – No chance for this young man after Beck signed the extension. Bartel will likely sign-on elsewhere.

Receivers: Terrance Austin, Bobby Wade, and Shay Hodge – Surprising news with the release of the rookie from UCLA. After performing well throughout the preseason and Brandon Banks muffing more than two kicks, we figured Austin had a better shot.

Cornerbacks: Justin Tryon and Ramzee Robinson – We hit this one on the head. Tryon was actually traded to Indianapolis for a future draft pick (high rounds) and Robinson didn’t have enough.

Running Backs: Ryan Torain, Carey Davis, and Willie Parker – Parker was done for sure, that was pretty much a certainty before the team’s final preseason game. Torain, on the other hand, was thought to make the team because of his special teams play and his familiarity with Mike Shanahan.

Offensive Line: Will Robinson, Selvish Capers, Clint Oldenburg, and Erik Cook – Originally thought that the team would go with more lineman, or at least different ones. Apparently the coaching staff preferred Lichtensteiger’s athleticism and Capers will have a shot at the PS, assuming he clears. Oldenburg was released more so because of injury.

Defensive Front Seven: Darrion Scott, Curtis Gatewood, Robert Henson, and Rob Jackson –Two releases were assumed, but Robert Henson’s release came because of injury. More surprising that the team decided to roll with Anthony Bryant – but space was made off the releases on the offensive line.

Safeties: Tyrone Carter and Anderson Russell – While we’re surprised with the release of Carter, we’re excited to know that Chris Horton remains – mainly because of ST contribution. Carter seemed to fit the scheme better than his counterpart and early word was that “The Predator” would be forced to pack his bags. No problems here.

And so the final 53-man roster for the 2010 Washington Redskins…

QUARTERBACKS (3) – Donovan McNabb, Rex Grossman and John Beck.
