Charles Barkley (OK, Not Really) and the Top 10 Celebrity Golfers

Chris TrapassoSep 3, 2010

What's better than being a celebrity and being great at golf?

Not much.

We all laugh hysterically at Charles Barkley's hitchy "swing" and find it hard to envision our favorite actors, singers, and former athletes being solid golfers - but there's plenty of them out there.

The thing is, when it comes to being famous, there's more than enough time to hone your game between shooting movies or recording albums.

With that, I give to you the Top 10 celebrity/athlete golfers...

10. Mark Wahlberg

Handicap 7.0

Is there anything this guy can't do?

He's jacked, has starred in countless action movies, plays the lead role that always gets the girl and is the executive producer of the most hip series on HBO, Entourage.

Apparently he knows his way around the golf course as well.

Last year, he broke 100 at Pebble Beach with hockey legend Wayne Gretzky

He's a lefty and is a member at Wilshire Country Club.

9. Bill Murray

2 of 10

Handicap - 8

He's definitely not the wacky pot-head grounds keeper he played in the famous Caddyshack movies, the 60-year-old Murray can really play the game.

We see him every year at the Pebble Beach pro-am, and though he's known to give the crowd a good laugh while he's strolling the fairways, Murray's love of golf is very deep.

He published a book in 1999 called Cinderella Story: My Life in Golf, which outlines his passion for the game.

Gotta love Bill Murray.

8.Samuel L. Jackson

3 of 10

Handicap - 5

I can just imagine Samuel Jackson yelling at the top of his lungs when he hits a bad shot...

"YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME"

Lucky for Jackson, or maybe his playing partners, Jackson doesn't hit very many errant shots when he's playing.

The guy's been in movies for decades and now with a scaled-back career, Jackson gets a lot of time to practice his skills on the golf course.

He's a usual at Pro-Ams, headlined last weeks BMW championship and is referred to by his fellow celebrities as an avid golfer.

7. Tea Leoni

Handicap - 12

The only female to make the list, Leoni would whoop most of our butts, and we know men don't take kindly to ladies, especially good-looking ones, owning on the golf course.

She started playing golf in 1997, and her and her husband David Duchovny play at Malibu Country Club on a regular basis.

6.Luke Wilson

5 of 10

Handicap - 7

Wilson is all over the screen, starring in "Middle-Men" today and was a mainstay during the 2000s with classic comedies "Blue Streak" and "Old School".

He somehow squeezes in time to hit the links and plays with buddy Pete Sampras at Bel-Air Country Club.

"The Godfather" has recently designed his own line of golf accessories for Puma.

5. Dan Marino

Arguably one of the best NFL quarterbacks of all time, Dan Marino isn't too shabby at golf either.

It seems to make sense, because Marino is known for being one of the fiercest competitors in history, so I can't picture him putting up with sub-par performances in anything he does.

Like many of celebs on this list, Marino's a fixture at Pro-Ams across the country.

Unfortunately for him, he's not the best quarterback on this list...

4.John Elway

Handicap - .9

There's gotta be something about being great in other sports that translates to golf.

We knew that Elway was a world-class football and baseball player coming out of Stanford, but many don't know how great of a ball-striker and golfer Elways is.

I guess when you're a pure athlete like Elway, the game of golf comes easy? The two-time Super Bowl winner consistently breaks par and shot a 72 with a seven on his card at the HealthOne Colorado Senior Open.

John hosts a golf tournament each year called the John Elway Celebrity Classic

3. Dennis Quaid

I researched and researched and Dennis Quaid's 1.1 handicap is the lowest I found among movie stars.

He's a guy I can't really picture shooting in the 60s, but apparently he can.

Quaid's been making films since the 70s is a solid actor, but might be even a better golfer.

Continually improving player.

2. Brett Hull

Handicap - 0

A lot of people say hockey players are bound to stellar golfers.

The swings are similar and the slap-shot promotes an inside-out swing so it's not hard to imagine.

Brett Hull is pretty famous when it comes to the game of golf, and is known as one of the longer hitters in the group of former athletes who religiously play the game.

He's the VP of the Dallas Stars now but still finds the time to keep his handicap at 0.

1. Tony Romo

Like you didn't see this coming.

Tony Romo's plus handicap is eye-popping and he's tried to qualify for the U.S. Open for the past two years.

Shooting a round of 72 is most likely a disappointment for Romo and when he recently played with Tiger Woods, the World's number one said he stayed with him for most of the round.

His sports background is similar to John Elways in terms of being a star in multiple sports - Romo finished second in Wisconsin's Mr. Basketball to now NBA-star Caron Butler in high school.

Great quarterback, amazing athlete, superb golfer.
