NFL Cuts: Redskins Release Four, Place Malcolm Kelly On Injured Reserve
At 4:00pm today, every team went through with their required day of roster cuts, slimming their team down from 80 players to 75. Unfortunately, over 800 football players were released and informed that their services would no longer be needed. Our Washington Redskins were one of those teams, and while there was no real surprises, it’s never fun to watch a guy go.
Edwin Williams (OL)
Williams made the team as an undrafted rookie last season (Maryland alum) and started two games at right guard. Williams, a Washington DC native, was competing for a backup job at left guard this season. However, it appears as if seventh-round draft selection Selvish Capers will hold that position for now. We wish the very best for Edwin.

Projecting Every NFL Team's Starting Lineup 🔮

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
Lendy Holmes (S)
Holmes played in eight games last season for the Redskins, mostly on special teams, but he will not be with the team this year. Holmes appeared to have a decent preseason thus far, with four tackles and an interception in three games, but Shanahan thought otherwise. Unfortunately, this release doesn’t really come as a surprise.
James Dearth (LS)
Also not a real surprise with this one. Dearth was brought into camp in early August to compete with Nick Sundberg for the starting long-snapper job. Sundberg started off training camp somewhat shaky but appears to have straightened out and won the job.
Hall Davis (LB)
You may not know who Hall Davis is, and no one would expect you to. Davis was acquired via trade with the St. Louis Rams yesterday. The rookie linebacker participated in one day of practice before being released, which will ultimately result in no loss of draft pick for the Redskins.
Malcolm Kelly (WR)
Kelly faced a pretty tough road today. While likely praying to be placed on IR, there was a real chance of the third-year receiver being released.
Shanahan placed Kelly on IR this season, making him unavailable until next year. While some may think that the better move would have been to release him and make room on the roster, Shanahan obviously sees some sort of promise in the kid.
Other than the one roster spot, the decision to place Kelly on IR is in no way detrimental to the team (his salary is just under $500K). In fact, it’s kind of intriguing to know what Shanny really thinks of Kelly’s potential.
And that’s all folks…until Saturday. Final cuts.
