New York Rangers: This Season Could Be Glen Sather, John Tortorella's Last in NY

Nick PerriAug 31, 2010

Glen Sather has been general manager of the Rangers for ten years now, making the playoffs only four times. Over the years he’s spent in New York, he has made terrible moves such as trading Brian Leetch and Adam Graves, deciding not to resign players like Mark Messier and Jarmoir Jagr,  instead signing players like Bobby Holik, Pavel Bure, Wade Redden, Michael Rozsival, Chris Drury, and Scott Gomez to bogus contracts. But he has also made a few good moves as GM like trading for Jagr in the first place, signing Marian Gaborik, and drafting very good young players such as Michael Del Zotto, Marc Staal, Brandon Dubinsky, Ryan Callahan, Chris Kreider, etc.

But Glen Sather is still disliked by just about every New York Ranger fan, even with some of the good things he has done.

In March of 2010 Ranger fans showed their dissent with Glen Sather being general manager, by holding a huge riot in front of Madison Square Garden. But to no avail; James Dolan has kept Glen Sather as general manager and president of the New York Rangers.

Might this season be different?

If the Rangers fail to make the playoffs this season I’d be surprised if Glen Sather is not fired. He has definitely been warned about being fired, and why wouldn’t he? If the Rangers have another season like the last one  there would be no reason not to fire Sather.

He just hasn’t been a good fit in New York, and he continues to make head scratching moves season after season. One of the worst he’s made, in my honest opinion, is hiring John Tortorella as head coach. At the time Torts was hired it was evident that the Rangers needed a new head coach, because they were crumbling under Tom Renney. John Tortorella was not the answer, though, and he is not the coach the Rangers need right now. Tortorella is good because he is a tough coach, and holds all players accountable for their actions. This Rangers team is not built to have a tough coach like Tortorella.

Yes they have Sean Avery who could use a little nudge here-or-there, but sometimes Torts tends to overdo it. Benching players doesn’t help them learn from their mistakes, especially if the player is like Michael Del Zotto. Last season, in MDZ’s rookie season, Tortorella benched him for a period after making a mistake.

Why was this move stupid?

Easy, he was a rookie and thus bound to make mistakes. Rookie players make mistakes often; it’s called adapting at the NHL level. Benching him didn’t do anything but decrease his confidence, which is not something Del Zotto needed.

John Tortorella also failed to get the Rangers into the playoffs for the first time since the lock-out, but was not fired.

If the Rangers do not make the playoffs, I would be completely surprised if Glen Sather and John Tortorella are not fired during the off-season.

What do you think? Will there be consequences if the Rangers miss the post-season again?
