Orioles and Angels Recap: Season Looking Grim for Mike Scioscia's Angels

Danny HaugerAug 29, 2010

Sunday's series finale offered the Baltimore Orioles a chance to sweep the season series against the Angels for the first time ever.  Pleasant weather outside, but unrest in the AL West trailing Angels looking to rally a run of fleeting victories at a closing playoff window.

Breaking news of Mike Napoli being claimed off waivers also stirred more interest over future plans for the Angels prior to the start of the game. Napoli sat out Sunday.

Angel Torii Hunter stepped up to bat in the second inning going fifteen games without a run batted in and was left wanting. Excellent Angels pitching and defense kept the game scoreless through three in a game similar to Saturday early on.

Peter Bourjas grounded a single for the first Angel hit of the day increasing his batting average with two outs. Gurthrie struck out Reggie Willits on a failed check swing to end the inning.

Guthrie and Weaver both retired the first 11 of 12 batters in the ballgame which was held scoreless through the fourth inning.

Nine strike outs through the fifth inning for Jered Weaver but not a single run for 25 consecutive innings had been produced to help Jered's pitching. A total lack of offense flustered both lineups tied at zero through six frames.

A one to nothing lead for the Orioles was looking tough to overcome through seven innings of baseball.

The Angels put runners on the corners in the bottom of the ninth.  Bobby Abreu struck out on a slider. Torii hunter took the first pitch and popped it up to first base to end the game and the first Orioles sweep of the season ever.
