Colt McCoy: Cleveland Browns Rookie Quarterback Safe From Being Cut

Daniel WolfAug 25, 2010

The Cleveland Browns' third-round pick, quarterback Colt McCoy, has been in the news lately due to an article published by The Plain Dealer from Browns beat writer Tony Grossi saying he was on the roster bubble.

Cleveland news and the Internet has been going crazy with this news, and it has resulted in many speculations that either Grossi is a genius for writing this to gain national attention, Grossi is a mad man, or simply that he could be right.

Cleveland Browns officials have not spoken about this since it is really an internal matter that will be dealt with privately.

But one unnamed league official has just told The Plain Dealer that McCoy will make the final cuts when they come down on Sept. 4th.

"Browns rookie QB Colt McCoy will make the final roster barring an unforeseen circumstance, league source tells P.D.," tweeted Mary Kay Cabot, who is also a Browns beat reporter for The Plain Dealer, at 6:39 P.M. EDT on Aug. 25.

What could the "unforeseen circumstance" be?

Possibly a season-ending injury, but that would mean the Browns could just place him on the Injured Reserve, which would in turn free up his roster spot for another quarterback.

Regardless of what was meant, this league source is most likely more reliable of a source than Grossi's statement of McCoy being on the bubble only one day ago.

With two solid veterans ahead of him on the quarterback depth chart, in Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace, McCoy does not need to get on the field and raise eyebrows because it is his job to learn the pro game from the bench in year No. one.

Many say that Mike Holmgren should have traded for Sam Bradford or Tim Tebow, but he did not. Some also say Holmgren should have picked Jimmy Clausen, but he passed on him twice.

That alone should tell you how much he liked McCoy, but he decided to play with fate and wait to fill other needs and hope McCoy would still be around when the Browns were ready to pick him. Fate did sway in the favor of Cleveland, since McCoy was still available in the third round.

In the end, McCoy will make the final 53-man roster, and it is very rare for a third-round quarterback to get cut before he even gets a chance to prove anything in a real game situation during the regular season.
