Brad Childress and the Coaching Solution the Vikings Are Looking For

Josh McCainAug 19, 2010

I've avoided writing about Brett Favre all offseason, mostly because I had absolutely no doubt that he would be back if his ankle allowed it.

However, I write about him and his Vikings this morning because I see trouble brewing in the twin cities.

For those of you keeping up on the yearly summer hit on both ESPN and NFL Network known simply as the Favre-Saga, you've probably heard rumors that Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress is in danger of losing control of his locker room.

In fact, Profootballtalk.com and Yahoo! sports have both reported that very few players like or even respect Childress.

A head coach not having the respect of his players is not a good thing, and will most likely spell a disappointing season for the Vikes.

Fear not though Vikings' fans, for I have a plan that can save your season, and maybe the franchise.

Fire Chilly and make Favre a player-coach.  It could work, seriously.

The playbook wouldn't really have to change since Favre was in the system last year, and if rumors are true, he was essentially changing Chilly's calls anyways. Why not just get rid of the middle man?

Again, according to rumors, Favre garners more respect than the head coach so one would think he'd have better control over the locker room.

Not only would Brett get more respect, this could solve two nagging problems within the franchise.

One, with Favre as the quarterback and the head coach, we might not have the yearly "is he or isn't he coming back" talk, as the coach will know he'll be there just not sure in what capacity.

Also he could put to rest the quarterback controversy in Minnesota.  As the head man Favre could hand pick his quarterbacking successor.  Whether that person is Tavaris Jackson, Sage Rosenfels, or someone not even associated with the team at this time.

Favre hand picking and grooming his own successor has the potential to set up the Vikings for great success after Favre, much like the Packers under Aaron Rodgers.

The major question: Would Brett make a good head coach?

Honestly, I don't know—I don't think he'd be any worse than Chilly.

It is my opinion (and I could be wrong) that the Vikes have won in spite of their head coach.

They've got a great defense, excellent offensive line, and maybe the best running back in the NFC, if not the NFL. Add Favre to that and one has to wonder how they didn't have home field advantage last year, and how they didn't get to the Super Bowl.

I honestly think their coach is holding them back, and maybe, just maybe, putting Favre under the headset might get this team over the hump.

I think it's something Vikings management might want to look into.  Only those within the organization know if these rumors are true, and if they are, Chilly might not be there much longer, so why not take one more gamble on Mr. Favre?
