NFL Preseason: The Top 10 Storylines This Weekend
With the Hall of Fame game already out of the way, the Panthers and Ravens kick off Thursday night to signal the start of a full slate of games in Preseason Week One.
As usual, most starters around the league aren't expected to play extensively, but there are plenty of storylines to keep an eye on.
Several rookies around the league debut, including top-overall pick Sam Bradford and heralded first-round pick Tim Tebow.
The preseason is a third-string quarterback's time to shine, and Tebow should get plenty of chances to show what he can contribute at the NFL level.
Elsewhere, the Steelers continue to scramble to find a temporary replacement for Ben Roethlisberger and Rex Ryan continues to hope that Darrelle Revis will soon return to the Jets.
Here's a closer look at those storylines and what else is going on heading into Preseason Week One.
No. 10: Brandon LaFell a Surprise Starter For The Panthers
1 of 10
Brandon LaFell had an up-and-down career at LSU plagued by drops. Scouts were concerned about his small hands and big attitude, but the Panthers took a chance.
The early returns are very positive.
LaFell is listed as the Panthers' starting wide receiver as the team prepares to face the Ravens Thursday on ESPN. His quick rise up the depth chart could spell the end of Dwyane Jarrett's run in Carolina.
Jarrett, the former All-American at USC, is currently listed as a second team receiver and will likely need to contribute in the preseason to secure a roster spot as he prepares to enter his fourth NFL season.
No. 9: Rex Ryan Really Wants Darrelle Revis In Camp
2 of 10
Rex Ryan is a walking soundbite, and Wednesday he spoke about his desire to help the Jets work out a contract with Darrelle Revis.
Ryan told ESPNNewYork.com:
"This is what I would love to happen; Everybody put their cards on the table. Have Darrelle come here with anybody he wants. We'll have Woody Johnson here. We'll call off practice. We'll have our whole team there to meet."
Since that scenario isn't likely to happen, Ryan will have to begin the quest to groom a replacement for Revis when the Jets meet the Giants on Monday.
No. 8: Steelers Quarterback Battle Begins
3 of 10
The Steelers host the Lions Friday as Mike Tomlin begins his quest for a starting quarterback to open the season.
At the moment, Byron Leftwich has the edge. Dennis Dixon has much more talent than Leftwich, but is still very raw, and 35 year-old Charlie Batch is also a distant possibility.
No. 7: Jason Campbell Makes His Raiders' Debut
4 of 10
Jason Campbell makes his debut with the Raiders against a familiar foe when Oakland heads to Dallas Thursday.
Campbell was 1-4 as a starter with the Redskins against the Cowboys and looks to revitalize one of the NFL's worst offensive teams in recent years.
Although he isn't likely to play after the first quarter, it will be interesting to see how the Raiders utilize Campbell in the offense.
Often-injured running back Darren McFadden is nursing a hamstring injury and will miss the game.
No. 6: The Mike Martz Era Gets Underway For The Bears
5 of 10
Mike Martz can't stop gushing about his new quarterback. Throughout Bears' camp, Martz has praised Jay Cutler to no end, calling him a genius who sees things most quarterbacks don't see.
Martz's genius as an offensive coordinator should have an impact on Cutler, one way or another.
After throwing 26 interceptions last season, the feisty QB heads into the season with a complex new system and a below-average group of wide receivers.
The Bears get their first chance to show what they have learned from Martz Saturday against the Chargers.
No. 5: Pete Carroll Returns to The Pros, Justin Forsett Ready To Go
6 of 10
After getting out of USC just in time, Pete Carroll is back in the NFL and is anxious to show what he has learned.
His starting running back, Justin Forsett, has become a popular sleeper pick in fantasy football circles, as he prepares for the upcoming season.
Forsett is expected to see plenty of action early when the Seahawks host the Titans Saturday, as he looks to solidify his starting job.
The former Cal star spent part of the summer at the Michael Johnson Performance Center in Texas looking to improve his breakaway speed.
No. 4: The Sam Bradford Begins In St. Louis, Brett Favre Won't Be There
7 of 10
Sam Bradford has had a strong training camp for the Rams, who make their preseason debut Saturday against the Favre-less Vikings.
Bradford should see a significant amount of action in his first NFL game, provided an adequate sample of how far he has progressed.
Meanwhile, the Vikings will begin ushering Tarvaris Jackson back into the offense in a hurry as the Favre watch continues.
No. 3: McNabb Debuts, Haynesworth To Play As 'Skins Host Bills
8 of 10
Donovan McNabb will wear his new uniform for the first time when the Redskins kick off the preseason in front of the home fans against the Bills Thursday.
Surprisingly, one of his much-maligned teammates will also be suiting up.
Despite nursing a knee injury and failing to pass a simple conditioning test for more than a week, Albert Haynesworth is expected to see some action in the game.
The giant defensive tackle makes his debut in the 'Skins 3-4 scheme and will most likely work primarily with the second-team defense.
No. 2: It's Tebow Time
9 of 10
Did you really think you could make it through this slideshow without hearing about everybody's favorite quarterback?
Fresh off the removal of his Friar Tuck look, Tim Tebow debuts for the Broncos Sunday against the Bengals. Since he is the third string quarterback, he should see plenty of action.
It will be interesting to see if he reverts back to his old throwing motion or looks comfortable running a pro-style offense for the first time.
No. 1: Young Eagles Take Flight
10 of 10
Andy Reid's new-look Eagles squad takes the field Friday against the Jaguars as the Kevin Kolb era begins.
Kolb is only one of the relatively inexperienced Eagles being counted on to do great things this season. Second-year back LeSean McCoy assumes his role as the team's primary ball carrier, and starters Brent Celek, Jeremy Maclin, and Leonard Weaver have limited experience as starters.
The Eagles will be an interesting team to watch all season and have plenty of other young players ready to battle it out during the preseason.
