What can be done to improve the WWE Tag Team Division?

Back in September I did a post about whether or not I thought that the reigning Unified Tag Team Champions, Chris Jericho and The Big Show, could save the tag team division.  Well, here it is almost a year later, and the obvious answer is NO !

     For a while though, Jerishow did generate some interest.  Even if it wasn’t so much for the tag belts, as it was for the two of them claiming to be the best Champions of all time.  That, and Jericho is just good at bringing heat on himself, therefore making any Title he has a bit more interesting.  But at least for a little while, it looked as though there might be some renewed interest in making the tag team division competitive again.  Of course, as things would work out, once the Titles changed hands a couple of times, interest began to drop.

     Now we have The Hart Dynasty as the current Unified Champions, with their biggest threat being about the only other “legit” tag team out there…The Uso’s.  So what should happen if The Uso brothers defeat The Hart Dynasty?  Not too much, since there really isn’t another good tag team around set to challenge them.  This was kind of the case a while back when Paul London and Brian Kendrick held on to the Tag Team Championships for about a hundred years.  It’s easy to remain Champions when you don’t have any challengers.

     So what can be done to turn things around and make things interesting again.  The first thing that has to happen, is to stop calling it the Unified Tag Team Championships.  We don’t need two sets of Belts, because there is no need for two sets of Champions.  Lugging around both sets just implies that at some point they will get split up again, which as far as I can tell, they won’t.  But it does give Natalya something to do for now, since she isn’t wrestling much.  The second thing that can be done would be do have a tournament on both shows.  RAW puts together teams to compete, and Smackdown does the same.  The teams that win on each show would then face each other, with the winner being the number one contenders, and thus getting the next shot at the Titles, and the losing team being the number two contenders. 

     I have always been a big fan of tournaments, especially for tag teams, because you can put almost any two wrestlers together and see what happens.  But in this day and age its all about the single competitors.  Nobody likes being paired up, because then the have to share the spotlight.  Teams like The Road Warriors, or Team 3D that stick together for their entire career just don’t happen.  

     So those are my thoughts on how things could improve.  I doubt much will change in the coming year, but stranger things have happened.
