The New York Mets battled back from a 6 run deficit only to lose in 13 innings as the St. Louis Cardinals tied the series at 1-1. With the loss NY has dropped to 4-8 in extra inning games this season and are a Major League worst 11-21in 1 run games. Since the All-Star break NY is just 3-12 and a dismal 7-18 during the month of July. Manager Jerry Manuel spoke about his teams efforts in the loss:
"It’s tough, it’s tough but you always feel that when your team down 6-0 or whatever and 7-2 and comeback and score that many runs late. For us to score that many runs is hopefully indicative that the offense is starting to come around and starting to click so those are the positives out of tonight. I think Frankie did a good job in the pen, Acosta did a good job, we actually pitched pretty well out of the pen for the most part. We had a lot of positives come out of tonight we just unfortunate weren’t able to get it done, we had a big shot there late, but weren’t able to get it done.”

Manuel spoke about all the positives in tonight’s game but as Bobby Ojeda of SNY mentioned in the post game:
"We can put a happy face on it but there’s the hard cold reality right there you lost a game that you fought to get back and its gone. Your gonna turn this thing around in a couple of hours against a team thats playing pretty good baseball right now.”

Johan Santana (5 2/3 IP, 7 ER) allowed a career high 13 hits and was battered for 7 ER over 5 2/3 IP while Cardinals rookie Jaime Garcia allowed 3 ER over 6 innings pitched as neither starter factored in the decision. Santana allowed just 3 ER in his last 38 IP (0.71 ERA) and had this to say about his rough outing:
