How the trade deadline should look

Andrew TannerJul 25, 2010
Because this year has a small amount of teams that are out of it and has a player or two that everyone wants this will become the bidder's war for the top players. In Washington there is a player like Adam Dunn, in Houston there are players like Roy Oswalt and Bret Myers, in Arizona there is Dan Haren, and in Kansas City there is Zach Greinke. Not that the American League is a bad place for the Cy Young pitchers, but the last three American League Cy Young award winners have either been traded or signed with a different team. Zach Greinke should be getting rumors around him, yet the rumors are with Roy Oswalt and Dan Haren. Why not get a quite deal going for Zach Greinke. I'm sure there is someone loaded with prospects and is willing to trade for Dan Haren or someone that is willing to make a contract extension for Roy Oswalt, but for Zach Greinke you could probably go deep into your farm system and find a gem. Remember last year when it was told that Roy Halladay would go to the Phillies by the trade deadline? Didn't happen, but, it was Cliff Lee who went to the Phillies. Now, one thing that many teams are looking for is a starting pitcher and there is only one pitcher throughout the season that has gone at least six innings in all of his starts. The guy that has done that is Bret Myers. Why not go after him? He's also cheap. His contract is now worth $1,666,666.67. If you can get a pitcher for that cheap who is also an inning eater, then you should be considered a winner at the trade deadline. The Phillies decided to let him go and now they are probably wishing that they still had him. If you are willing to spend money then you could go after Roy Oswalt or even Dan Haren.
Another player that may be headed out is Adam Dunn. Dunn is on the last year of his contract and why not go after him? He's hit at least 19 home runs every season he's played in the MLB. For the last seven year's he's hit at least 30 home runs. Who wouldn't want a bat like that in their line up? Not to mention he's in the last two months of his contract, so it would be nice to have him. Maybe who ever gets him could try and sign him to a multi year deal.

So, as you could see here, there's not many teams who are looking to make a deal to trade away their star players in this year's trade deadline. There are teams that have holes to fill and are still in it for the playoffs, but not many teams that are looking to trade one of their better players. It will be an interesting week this week. Right now, there are teams that are on the line between still in it for the playoffs and not in it for the playoffs. How those teams play this week could dictate how the trade deadline will look like.
I'm Andrew Tanner saying good bye and good night.
