Why Female Mixed Martial Arts Needs Your Attention Tonight

Andrew GladstoneJul 23, 2010

Strikeforce has decided to put on a great female title fight tonight on Strikeforce Challengers 9 between current undefeated female 135-pound champion Sarah Kaufman and the top-five ranked female fighter Roxanne Modafferi.

Roxanne Modafferi (15-5) is a submission expert with heavy hands and a go-for-broke style of striking.  In Modafferi’s last fight, she won a split decision against, considered one of the top pound-for-pound females of the sport, Tara LaRosa.

Sarah Kaufman (11-0) has shown she’s one of the more polished boxers in the division. Also, Kaufman has shown great takedown defense, with no prior wrestling experience before she entered MMA.

In Kaufman’s last fight, she outclassed top-three ranked female Takayo Hashi to win the Strikeforce women's 135=pound title.

Kaufman, despite being undefeated and the top-ranked female in the divisions, remains the only top-ranked fighter or champion in Strikeforce never to have fought on the big shows.

Ben Fowlkes of MMA Fighting (www.mmafighting.com) recently wrote a blog saying if we don't like the double standards in MMA, we should do something about it, and tonight we as mixed martial arts fans have a great chance to do this.

The females of mixed martial arts need our support if they're ever going to fully get out of the dark ages in the sport and get them in the spotlight.

So MMA fans please tune into Showtime tonight at 11:00 p.m. ET and let's show Strikeforce that their females deserve the spotlight too.
